Welcome to Abidjan, the vibrant economic heart of Ivory Coast, often called the “Paris of West Africa.” This bustling metropolis offers a unique blend of modern skyscrapers and traditional culture, making it a fascinating stop on West African cruise itineraries.
Cruise lines like Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Silversea bring travelers to experience its dynamic art scene, lively markets, and lush urban rainforests.
For cruise passengers, Abidjan is an opportunity to dive into a contemporary African city that has preserved its rich heritage, offering an experience that is both authentic and exhilarating.
One of Abidjan's most striking landmarks is St. Paul's Cathedral, an architectural marvel with a unique, modern design that symbolizes an elephant protecting the city. Located in the Le Plateau district, it's a short 15-20 minute drive from the port.
For a dose of nature within the city, visit the Parc National du Banco. This patch of primary rainforest offers walking trails and a peaceful escape from the urban hustle, allowing visitors to see the region's native flora. To delve into Ivorian culture and history, head to Le Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire, which houses an impressive collection of traditional art, masks, and artifacts from across the country.
A visit to a local market is a must, and the Marché de Cocody offers a vibrant atmosphere where you can find everything from local crafts to fresh produce and textiles.

A popular day trip from Abidjan is the historic town of Grand-Bassam, located about 45 kilometers to the east. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was the first colonial capital of Ivory Coast and is famous for its charming, dilapidated French colonial architecture and beautiful coastline. The drive typically takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
Another excellent option is Jacqueville, a coastal town situated on a scenic strip of land between the Ébrié Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and pineapple plantations, it's a great place to experience a different pace of life and is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from the port.

The Port of Abidjan (Port Autonome d'Abidjan) is a large commercial port located in the Treichville area, south of the central business district known as Le Plateau.
Cruise ships dock at a commercial pier, so the immediate area is industrial and not suitable for walking. The city center is approximately 5 to 10 kilometers away, and transportation is necessary to reach any attractions.
There are very few, if any, passenger amenities like shops or restaurants directly at the pier. Taxis are usually waiting outside the port gates, or passengers can opt for cruise line shuttles or pre-booked tours to get into the city.

The official currency in Ivory Coast is the West African CFA Franc (XOF).
While some upscale hotels may accept Euros, it is not common practice in most shops, restaurants, or markets. U.S. dollars are even less frequently accepted.
It is highly recommended to carry local currency for most transactions. ATMs are available in secure locations like shopping malls and bank branches, and currency exchange services can be found at the airport and major banks. Credit cards are generally accepted at high-end hotels and restaurants in the Plateau and Cocody districts, but cash is essential for markets and smaller vendors.

Abidjan is a major city, and visitors should exercise the same precautions as in any large urban area. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching, can occur, especially in crowded places like markets and bus stations.
It is advisable to avoid displaying expensive items like jewelry, cameras, and large sums of cash. Be particularly vigilant in busy districts like Treichville and Adjame.
For first-time visitors or those unfamiliar with the city, opting for guided tours or hiring a reputable driver is the safest and most efficient way to explore. While independent exploration is possible, it requires a higher degree of caution, and it's best to avoid walking alone at night.

Abidjan has a hot and humid tropical climate year-round. Most West African cruises visit during the main dry season, which runs from December to March.
During this period, you can expect average daily temperatures between 27°C and 30°C (80-86°F) with high humidity. Rainfall is minimal, but the air can be hazy due to the Harmattan winds blowing dust from the Sahara.
Passengers should pack lightweight, breathable clothing, such as cotton and linen, along with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen. Insect repellent is also essential, particularly for visits to parks or areas near water. While it's the dry season, a light rain jacket is never a bad idea for a rare, brief shower.

Taxis are the most practical and common mode of transport for cruise passengers in Abidjan. Look for the distinct orange-colored taxis and always negotiate the fare before you begin your journey, as meters are rarely used.
Ride-sharing apps like Yango are also popular, offering a more standardized pricing structure and a convenient way to get around.
While the city has public transport options like minibuses (gbakas), they are often overcrowded and can be challenging for visitors to navigate, so they are not recommended for tourists.
Most attractions are a short drive from the port, so booking a taxi for a few hours or joining a pre-arranged shore excursion is the most efficient way to explore.

For authentic Ivorian crafts, the best place to shop is the Centre Artisanal de la Ville d'Abidjan (CAVA). Here you can find a wide variety of high-quality goods like wooden masks, sculptures, bronze work, and textiles at fixed, fair prices, making it a hassle-free experience.
For a more bustling and traditional shopping adventure, head to the large markets like Marché de Treichville or Marché de Cocody. In these markets, you can find vibrant wax-print fabrics, shea butter, spices, and souvenirs, but be prepared to haggle as it is a standard part of the transaction.
Look for local specialties such as hand-carved masks, Baule fabrics, and cashews, which Ivory Coast is a major producer of.
