Key Bahrain Port Information

🏛️ Top Attractions & Excursions

One of the most significant attractions is the Qal'at al-Bahrain, or Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient harbor and fortress showcases thousands of years of history and is just a short drive from the city center.

A visit to the Bahrain National Museum is essential for understanding the nation's rich archaeological and cultural past, from the Dilmun civilization to its famed pearling industry. For a glimpse into Islamic architecture, the magnificent Al-Fateh Grand Mosque welcomes visitors of all faiths outside of prayer times. To experience the bustling heart of the city, head to the Manama Souq, a vibrant traditional market perfect for finding souvenirs and soaking in the local atmosphere.

🗺️ Nearby Cities & Attractions

A major draw outside the capital is the Bahrain International Circuit, located about a 45-minute drive south of the port. Even on non-race days, visitors can often take a track tour to see the world-famous Formula 1 venue up close.

Nearby, you can visit the Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve, a sanctuary for Arabian Peninsula fauna like the oryx. For a truly unique sight, some tours venture further into the desert to see the Tree of Life, a solitary, 400-year-old mesquite tree that thrives in the arid landscape, approximately an hour's drive from the port.

📍 Port Location

Cruise ships dock at the Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP), located in Hidd on a reclaimed island. The port is approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) northeast of the capital city, Manama. It is an industrial and container port that also accommodates cruise vessels.

Due to the distance and the industrial nature of the port area, it is not possible to walk to the city center or nearby attractions. Passengers must rely on transportation. Cruise lines typically provide shuttle buses to a central point in Manama, such as a major shopping mall. Taxis and pre-booked tours are also readily available at the terminal.

Last updated on June 29, 2025

💰 Local Currency

The official currency is the Bahraini Dinar (BHD). The Dinar is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at a fixed rate of approximately 1 BHD to 2.65 USD.

While US dollars may be accepted at some major tourist establishments, it is highly recommended to use the local currency for most transactions. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and modern shopping malls. ATMs are readily available throughout Manama and in major shopping centers, providing a convenient way to withdraw Bahraini Dinars.

⚠️ Safety Considerations

Bahrain is generally a very safe country for tourists, with low crime rates. Standard safety precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas like the Manama Souq, should be followed.

It is important to be respectful of local customs and Islamic traditions. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting mosques or religious sites, by ensuring shoulders and knees are covered. Independent exploration of Manama and major tourist sites is considered safe, though guided tours can provide valuable context and a more efficient way to see the sights in a limited time.

☀️ Weather & Climate

The main cruise season in Bahrain runs from November through March, coinciding with the pleasant winter months. During this period, the weather is ideal for sightseeing, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F). Humidity is low and rainfall is minimal, though short showers can occasionally occur.

It is advisable to pack light clothing, such as cottons and linens, along with a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential year-round due to the strong sun. The summer months from May to September are extremely hot and humid, which is why cruise lines typically visit during the cooler winter season.

🚕 Getting Around

Transportation is necessary to explore Bahrain as the cruise port is located away from the main attractions. Taxis are the most common option for independent travelers and are generally available outside the port terminal. It is advisable to ensure the meter is used or to agree on a fare before starting your journey.

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Careem are also widely available and offer a convenient way to get around. For a hassle-free day, many passengers opt for cruise line-sponsored shore excursions or book a private car hire for the day. While a public bus network exists, it is not typically recommended for visitors on a tight schedule.

🛍️ Shopping

For an authentic shopping experience, the Manama Souq is a must-visit. Here you can wander through narrow lanes and haggle for traditional goods such as spices, perfumes, textiles, and local handicrafts. It's the best place to find unique souvenirs.

Bahrain is world-renowned for its natural pearls, and you can find exquisite jewelry in dedicated shops in the souq and high-end boutiques. For a modern shopping spree, visit large malls like City Centre Bahrain or The Avenues Bahrain, which feature international brands, restaurants, and entertainment. Prices in the souq are negotiable, while they are fixed in the malls.
