Another significant site is the Museum of Black Civilisations (Musée des Civilisations Noires). This modern museum, located in the city center, showcases the history and cultural contributions of Black people from across the globe.

A popular day trip is to Lake Retba, also known as the Pink Lake. Located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Dakar, the journey takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours by car. The lake's distinct pink color, caused by algae, is most visible during the dry season.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the Bandia Reserve offers a safari experience within a manageable distance. It is located about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of Dakar, requiring a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours. Here, visitors can see giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and antelopes in a protected environment.

The cruise port of Dakar is conveniently located at the southern tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula, adjacent to the city's central business district, known as the Plateau.

Due to its central location, many of the city's highlights, including Independence Square and the Presidential Palace, are within walking distance or a very short taxi ride from the port gate. Ships typically dock directly at the pier, so tendering is not usually required.

The immediate port area is primarily industrial, with limited amenities. However, a short walk into the Plateau district will bring you to numerous shops, restaurants, and banks.

The official currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). While some larger hotels and tourist-oriented shops may accept Euros, it is not common practice, and US dollars are rarely accepted.

Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas after dark. Be wary of overly persistent street vendors or unsolicited offers of guided tours, which can sometimes be scams. Using official, licensed guides or those arranged through the cruise line is recommended.

While exploring the city center independently is feasible for experienced travelers, taking a taxi or a guided tour is often a more comfortable and secure way to visit attractions, especially those outside the downtown core.

Dakar features a hot semi-arid climate with two distinct seasons, typically aligning well with cruise ship visits. The most common cruise season is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During this period, the weather is pleasant and sunny with very little rainfall, and average temperatures range from 18°C to 27°C (64°F to 81°F).

The wet season occurs from June to October, bringing higher humidity, warmer temperatures, and the majority of the year's rainfall. Ocean breezes help moderate the temperatures year-round.

Passengers should pack lightweight clothing, such as cottons and linens, along with strong sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring.

Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation for cruise passengers in Dakar. Official taxis are typically yellow and black. It is crucial to negotiate and agree upon the fare before beginning your trip, as meters are rarely used.

A public ferry service operates from a terminal near the cruise port to Gorée Island, providing easy access to this key historical site.

While Dakar has a local bus system, including the iconic "Cars Rapides," it can be crowded and challenging for tourists to navigate. For most visitors with limited time, taxis or pre-arranged tours are the most practical options for reaching attractions beyond the immediate port area.

Dakar offers vibrant shopping experiences, especially in its traditional markets. The covered Marché Kermel, known for its beautiful ironwork architecture, sells high-quality produce, seafood, and a good selection of handicrafts. For a more bustling and sprawling experience, the Sandaga Market is a hub of activity, though it requires a keen sense of awareness.

For fixed-price and high-quality artisanal goods, the Village Artisanal de Soumbédioune is an excellent choice. Here you can find wood carvings, leather goods, textiles, and jewelry, and often see artisans at work.

Bargaining is a standard and expected practice in all local markets. It's best to have small denominations of CFA francs, as vendors may not have change for large bills.
