Welcome to Dominica, the “Nature Island” of the Caribbean! Unlike its neighbors, Dominica lures travelers with its unspoiled natural beauty rather than its beaches. Major lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line frequently call here, offering passengers a chance to explore a world of lush rainforests, towering waterfalls, and volcanic wonders.
This is a port for adventurers and nature lovers, where you can hike to a boiling lake, swim through a narrow gorge, or simply marvel at the island's raw, majestic landscapes.
One of the most popular excursions is to Trafalgar Falls, a pair of stunning waterfalls just a 25-minute drive from Roseau. A short walk through the rainforest leads you to viewing platforms and pools for swimming.
For a unique adventure, visit Titou Gorge, where you can swim through a narrow, sun-dappled canyon to a hidden waterfall. This site, featured in a "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, is about a 45-minute drive from the port.
Another must-see is the enchanting Emerald Pool, a grotto with a cascading waterfall located within the national park. It's an easy 15-minute walk to the pool, making it accessible for most visitors and about a 40-minute drive from Roseau.

Just a 15-minute drive south of Roseau lies Champagne Reef, one of the Caribbean's most unique snorkeling and diving sites. Here, geothermal vents on the sea floor release streams of tiny bubbles, making you feel like you're swimming in a glass of champagne.
For relaxation, head to the village of Wotten Waven, about 20 minutes inland. This area is famous for its natural sulphur hot springs and therapeutic mud baths, offering a perfect way to soothe muscles after a hike.
A bit further south is Scotts Head, a picturesque fishing village at the southernmost tip of the island. It offers stunning views where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, and it's a great spot for photos and enjoying local life.

Dominica has two main cruise facilities near the capital, Roseau. The primary pier, the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, is ideally located right in the heart of downtown. Passengers can step off the ship and immediately access shops, the Old Market, and local restaurants on foot.
If your ship docks at the Woodbridge Bay Port, you will be about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the city center. While walkable for the very active, most passengers opt for a short taxi ride, which is readily available at the pier. Tendering is rare but can occur if multiple ships are visiting on the same day.

The official currency of Dominica is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD). The exchange rate is fixed to the US Dollar at approximately EC$2.70 to US$1.00.
While the official currency is the XCD, US dollars are widely accepted in most tourist areas, including by taxi drivers and tour operators. However, you will likely receive your change in XCD. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, but it's essential to carry cash for smaller purchases, market vendors, and tips. ATMs are available throughout Roseau.

Dominica is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination for tourists. Standard precautions should be taken, such as securing your valuables and being aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets. Walking around the capital of Roseau during the day is safe.
For exploring the island's natural attractions, it is highly recommended to book a shore excursion or hire a licensed, reputable guide. Hiking trails can be rugged and poorly marked, and a guide will ensure your safety while providing valuable insight into the local flora and fauna. Avoid walking alone in remote areas or on deserted beaches, particularly after dark.

Dominica has a warm, tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures ranging from 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C). As the "Nature Island," it receives significant rainfall, which keeps the landscape lush and green. Expect the possibility of brief, intense rain showers at any time, even during the drier season from December to May.
Visitors should pack light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, and sun protection. A light rain jacket or umbrella is a must-have item. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and while direct hits are infrequent, cruise itineraries may be altered if a storm is in the region.

Taxis are the most convenient way for cruise passengers to get around Dominica and reach the various natural attractions. Taxis are unmetered, so it is crucial to agree on the fare with the driver before beginning your trip. Licensed taxi drivers are readily available at the cruise port.
Public transportation consists of a network of private minibuses that are affordable but follow set routes and have no fixed schedule, making them impractical for tourists on a tight timeline. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft do not operate in Dominica. For exploring the island, the best options are either hiring a taxi for the day or joining an organized island tour.

The main shopping area for cruise visitors is located directly across from the cruise terminal in Roseau at the Old Market Plaza and along the Bayfront. Here you will find numerous stalls and vendors selling a variety of local crafts and souvenirs.
Look for authentic Kalinago crafts, particularly hand-woven baskets and carvings, which are a specialty of the island's indigenous people. Other popular items include local rum, pungent hot sauces, spices, coconut-based soaps, and hand-made jewelry. While some light, friendly bargaining is acceptable at the craft markets, prices are generally reasonable. Some stores in Roseau offer duty-free shopping for liquor and perfumes.
