Korcula Cruise Port Guide

The heart of your visit is Korcula's Old Town, a beautifully preserved medieval walled city that you can explore on foot directly from the tender dock. Its main attraction is the magnificent St. Mark’s Cathedral (Korcula Cathedral), a masterpiece of Gothic-Renaissance architecture showcasing works by Tintoretto.

Don't miss a visit to the Marco Polo House, believed to be the birthplace of the famous explorer, which now houses a small museum detailing his life and travels. For a taste of the region's famous viticulture, consider a wine tasting shore excursion. Many tours take you to the nearby town of Lumbarda or across the channel to the renowned vineyards of the Peljesac Peninsula to sample local Grk and Pošip white wines.

A very popular and easily accessible destination is the Peljesac Peninsula, just a 15-minute passenger ferry ride across the channel. This region is famous for producing some of Croatia's best red wines, particularly Dingač, and offers fantastic opportunities for wine tasting tours and scenic drives.

The town of Lumbarda, located at the eastern end of Korcula island, is another great choice. It's only about 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the port and can be reached by a short taxi or bus ride. Lumbarda is known for its unique sandy beaches, a rarity in Croatia, and is the home of the distinct Grk white wine, which can be sampled at local family-run wineries.

The cruise port experience in Korcula is exceptionally convenient. Most cruise ships anchor in the channel and tender passengers directly to the East Port (Uvala Luka Korculanska), located at the foot of the Old Town's historic walls. Some smaller ships may be able to dock at the West Port, which is also just a short walk from the town entrance.

From the tender drop-off point, you are literally steps away from the heart of Korcula's main attractions, shops, and restaurants. No shuttles or additional transportation are required to explore the Old Town. The seaside promenade right where you land is lined with cafes and tour operators, making it a bustling and welcoming arrival point.

The official currency in Korcula and throughout Croatia is the Euro (EUR). While US dollars are not widely accepted for transactions, most major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are welcomed in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops within the Old Town.

For smaller purchases at cafes, markets, or for tips, it is advisable to have some Euros in cash. ATMs are readily available near the port area and throughout the main town, providing an easy way to withdraw local currency upon arrival. You can also find exchange offices (Mjenjačnica) if you need to change other currencies.

Korcula is considered a very safe and welcoming destination for tourists. The crime rate is low, and visitors can feel comfortable exploring the Old Town and surrounding areas independently. The locals are friendly and generally speak English in tourist-facing establishments.

The main safety consideration is to be mindful of your footing on the ancient, polished cobblestone streets, which can be slippery, especially if wet. As in any popular tourist area, exercise standard precautions by keeping an eye on your personal belongings in crowded places. Otherwise, the island offers a secure environment for a relaxing day ashore.

Korcula enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, ideal for cruising from late spring to early autumn. The primary cruise season from May to October sees warm, sunny weather with minimal rainfall. Summers (June to August) are hot and dry, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Spring and autumn offer milder, very comfortable temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (64°F to 75°F), which are ideal for sightseeing. It's recommended to pack lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. A light jacket or sweater may be useful for cooler evenings, particularly in the shoulder seasons.

Exploring Korcula's Old Town is done entirely on foot, as it is a compact, largely pedestrianized area. You will not need any transportation to see the main sights within the city walls. Taxis are available near the port area if you wish to travel to other parts of the island, such as the beaches in Lumbarda.

For a unique local experience, water taxis are a popular option for reaching nearby islets like Badija and Vrnik for a swim or quiet walk. Local buses also connect Korcula Town with other villages, but schedules can be infrequent. Ride-sharing services like Uber are generally not available on the island, so taxis remain the primary option for independent travel beyond the town.

Shopping in Korcula offers a delightful experience focused on local crafts and products rather than big-name brands. The best shopping is found within the charming, narrow streets of the Old Town, where you'll discover numerous small boutiques and artisan workshops.

Look for unique souvenirs such as handmade jewelry, especially traditional filigree silver and red coral pieces. Local art galleries sell beautiful paintings and ceramics. Foodies will appreciate the local olive oil, honey, and famous regional wines like Pošip and Grk, which are sold in specialty shops. Prices are generally fixed, especially in established stores.
