The charming city of Puerto Varas, known for its German-influenced architecture, is a very popular day trip. Located approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) away on the shores of Llanquihue Lake, it's about a 30-minute drive and offers stunning volcano views.

A bit further north along the lake is Frutillar, another picturesque town renowned for its German heritage and the magnificent Teatro del Lago, a modern arts center. The journey takes about 45 to 60 minutes by car.

For a unique cultural experience, visitors can take a day trip to the northern part of Chiloé Island. This involves a drive and a short ferry ride, offering a glimpse into the island's distinct mythology and its famous wooden churches, which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cruise ships visiting Puerto Montt anchor in the Seno de Reloncaví bay and transfer passengers to shore via tender boats. The tender pier is typically located in the Angelmó area, which is situated just southwest of the main city center.

The city's central square, the Plaza de Armas, is approximately 1.5 kilometers (about 1 mile) from the tender pier, making it a pleasant 15-20 minute walk. Cruise lines may also offer shuttle buses to the city center or the main shopping mall.

During these months, the weather is at its warmest and driest, but rain showers can still occur at any time. Average summer temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). The weather can change very quickly, so dressing in layers is essential. Several transportation options are available for navigating Puerto Montt and its surroundings. Taxis are readily available near the tender drop-off point and can be hired for city tours or trips to nearby towns; always agree on the fare beforehand.

Shared taxis, known as "colectivos," operate on fixed routes and are a cost-effective way to travel like a local. For destinations like Puerto Varas or Frutillar, public buses depart regularly from the main bus terminal (Terminal de Buses). These buses are an affordable and reliable way to explore the Lake District independently.

The best and most authentic shopping is found at the Feria Artesanal de Angelmó, located right next to the famous fish market. This large handicraft market is the perfect place to find local specialties and souvenirs.

Look for high-quality woolen goods like sweaters, ponchos, and hats, many of which are crafted by artisans from nearby Chiloé Island. Other popular items include intricate wood carvings, copper jewelry, and items made with lapis lazuli, Chile's national stone. While prices in the market are relatively fair, polite bargaining is often acceptable. For a more conventional shopping experience, the Mall Paseo Costanera in the city center features a wide range of national and international stores.
