Here you can see stunning, well-preserved murals inside the excavated Temple of the Moon. Another fascinating, smaller site is the Huaca del Dragón (or Rainbow Temple), known for its detailed friezes.

Most cruise line shore excursions offer a combination tour of these incredible historical sites along with a brief visit to the colonial city of Trujillo.

The primary nearby destination is Trujillo, known as the 'City of Eternal Spring,' located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of the port. A 20-30 minute drive will take you to its historic center, filled with beautiful colonial mansions and a stunning main square, the Plaza de Armas.

Another popular spot is the coastal town of Huanchaco, about a 40-minute drive from Salaverry. This charming fishing village and surf spot is famous for its traditional 'caballitos de totora,' small reed boats used by local fishermen for centuries. It's a great place to enjoy a seafood lunch with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

The port of Salaverry is a commercial and industrial facility, not a dedicated cruise terminal. It is located about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the small town of Salaverry itself, and approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the main city of interest, Trujillo.

Due to the industrial nature of the port and the distance to the gate, complimentary shuttle buses are often provided to take passengers from the ship to the port entrance. There are no tourist amenities like shops or visitor centers within the immediate port area, so transportation into Trujillo is necessary to begin any sightseeing.
