Just a short 20-minute drive away lies Trujillo, known as the "City of Eternal Spring" for its consistently pleasant climate and colorful colonial mansions. A bit further north, approximately 45 minutes from the port, is the seaside village of Huanchaco, famous for its traditional reed watercraft called "caballitos de totora" and its excellent fresh ceviche.

The ship docks at a commercial industrial pier where walking is generally restricted due to heavy port operations and safety regulations. Passengers must typically take a complimentary shuttle bus from the gangway to the port gate or a designated plaza where taxis and independent tour operators await. The main attractions and the city center of Trujillo are not within walking distance, requiring a vehicle transfer of roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN), though US Dollars are widely accepted by tour guides, taxi drivers, and larger vendors. It is advisable to carry small denominations of Soles for purchasing souvenirs at local markets or buying snacks, as change for dollars may be difficult to find. ATMs and currency exchange houses (casas de cambio) are readily available around the main square in Trujillo.

While the immediate port area is generally secure, travelers should exercise standard caution regarding pickpocketing in crowded areas of Trujillo or busy markets. It is highly recommended to use official taxi services or arrange shore excursions through the cruise line rather than hailing unmarked street taxis. Visitors should stick to main tourist zones and avoid wandering into isolated neighborhoods on the outskirts of the cities.

The region enjoys an arid, desert climate with very little rainfall throughout the year, contributing to the preservation of its adobe ruins. Temperatures typically range from 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C), making for comfortable sightseeing weather, though mornings can be misty or cloudy before the sun breaks through. Passengers should pack layers, comfortable walking shoes for dusty archaeological sites, and plenty of sun protection.

Upon exiting the shuttle at the port gate, you will find a fleet of taxis and vans ready to transport visitors. Taxis to Trujillo should have fares negotiated in advance, though many visitors prefer pre-booked private tours or cruise line excursions to navigate the distance between the widely separated archaeological sites efficiently. There is no reliable public bus system suitable for cruise tourists to access the main ruins directly from the port.

The best shopping is found at the artisan markets located near the entrance of Chan Chan or in the historic center of Trujillo. Look for locally made ceramics replicating ancient Moche designs, leather goods, and high-quality alpaca textiles. Vendors generally expect some bargaining, particularly in open-air markets, but prices are often fixed in established boutiques and jewelry stores.
