For breathtaking panoramic views of Sarande and the Ionian Sea, a visit to Lëkurësi Castle is a must. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the 16th-century fortress ruins are just a short taxi ride away and host a restaurant on site.

Another popular excursion is the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a stunning natural water spring about 40 minutes inland. Its vivid turquoise water and mesmerizing depth make it a unique natural wonder. Within Sarande itself, you can find the remains of a 5th-century synagogue, testifying to the city's ancient history.

For those seeking beaches, the village of Ksamil is just a 20-minute drive south of Sarande. It is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and several small, picturesque islands just off the coast that are easily reachable by boat. Ksamil is considered part of the Butrint National Park area and offers a more relaxed, beach-focused alternative to the city.

The Port of Sarande is conveniently located directly in the city center, at the northern end of the main waterfront promenade. This prime location means that the city's shops, restaurants, and cafes are immediately accessible on foot as soon as you step ashore. No shuttles are required to explore the heart of Sarande.

The port itself is relatively small. While some smaller cruise ships may be able to dock at the pier, it is very common for larger vessels to anchor in the bay. In these cases, passengers are brought ashore via tender boats, which typically arrive at the main port terminal.

The official currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). While the Lek is the official currency, Euros are widely accepted in many tourist-oriented establishments, such as hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies.

However, it's advisable to carry some Lek for smaller purchases at cafes, local markets, and for public transport, as change will almost always be given in the local currency. ATMs are readily available along the main waterfront promenade and throughout the city center. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants but are less common in smaller shops, so having cash on hand is recommended.

Sarande is generally considered a very safe destination for tourists, and visitors can feel comfortable exploring the city center independently. The local population is known for being welcoming and friendly to visitors. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare.

Standard safety precautions should be followed, such as being mindful of your belongings in crowded areas like the waterfront promenade or local markets to prevent pickpocketing. When swimming, be aware of sea urchins on rocky seabeds. For excursions to more remote areas, using reputable tour operators or licensed taxis is advisable for convenience and safety.

Sarande enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, making the main cruise season from April to October very pleasant. Spring and autumn (April-May and September-October) see comfortable temperatures ranging from 15-25°C (60-77°F), ideal for sightseeing.

The peak summer months of June, July, and August are very hot and sunny, with temperatures often climbing above 30°C (86°F) and very little rainfall. Visitors during this time should pack light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. A light jacket is recommended for cooler evenings during the spring and fall months.

Sarande's city center is compact and easily walkable from the cruise port. For destinations further afield, taxis are readily available near the port area. It is highly recommended to agree on the fare with the driver before beginning your journey, as meters are not always used.

Local minibuses, known as 'furgons', are a very affordable way to travel to nearby destinations like Ksamil and Butrint. These buses depart from a central point in the city and offer an authentic local travel experience, though they may not adhere to a strict schedule. Ride-sharing services like Uber or Bolt are not operational in Sarande.

Shopping in Sarande is centered along the main seaside promenade, Bulevardi Hasan Tahsini, and the surrounding streets. Here you will find numerous souvenir shops, small boutiques, and local stalls. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Look for local specialties such as Albanian raki (a potent fruit brandy), local olive oil, and honey. Popular souvenirs include handmade crafts, items with the iconic double-headed eagle of the Albanian flag, and replicas of historical artifacts. While prices in most stores are fixed, you may be able to politely negotiate at open-air market stalls.
