Welcome to Sokcho, a stunning coastal city on South Korea's northeast shore, where dramatic mountains meet the clear waters of the East Sea. Increasingly popular with lines like Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises, Sokcho offers an authentic Korean experience away from the bustling mega-cities.
Its primary appeal is being the gateway to the magnificent Seoraksan National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Cruise passengers are drawn here for the unparalleled natural beauty, vibrant local culture, and delicious fresh seafood, making it a refreshing and scenic stop on any Asian itinerary.
The undisputed highlight of Sokcho is Seoraksan National Park, a breathtaking landscape of granite peaks, lush valleys, and ancient temples. Most visitors take the Seoraksan Cable Car up to the Gwongeumseong Fortress site for panoramic views and visit the historic Sinheungsa Temple with its giant bronze Buddha statue. The park entrance is about a 30-40 minute drive from the port.
For a taste of local life, head to the bustling Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. Here you can sample an incredible array of fresh seafood, Korean street food, and shop for local specialties. Don't miss a visit to Abai Village, a unique settlement originally founded by North Korean refugees, which you can reach via a famous hand-pulled boat ferry.

A popular excursion is a visit to the Goseong Unification Observatory, located about an hour's drive north of Sokcho. This is the northernmost point in South Korea from which you can get a glimpse into North Korea, offering a poignant look at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Another excellent day trip option is the city of Gangneung, located about 60-70 minutes south by car. It is famous for its beautiful Gyeongpo Beach, the historic Ojukheon House (birthplace of a famous Joseon-dynasty scholar), and a thriving coffee culture, with many artisanal cafes along the coast.

The Sokcho Cruise Terminal is located at the Port of Sokcho, situated slightly north of the main city center. It is not typically within walking distance of the main attractions. The distance to the downtown area and the popular Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market is approximately 3-4 kilometers (about 2 miles).
Cruise ships dock directly at the pier, so tendering is not required. Due to the distance, passengers will need transportation to explore. Cruise lines usually arrange for shuttle buses to key points in the city, and taxis are readily available at the terminal.

The official currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). US Dollars and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted for transactions, so you will need to use local currency.
Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in most restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. ATMs are readily available at the cruise terminal, in banks, and at convenience stores throughout the city for withdrawing Won. It is advisable to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases at local markets.

Sokcho is considered a very safe city with a low crime rate, and tourists can feel secure exploring independently. Standard precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas like markets, are always recommended. The local police are helpful and professional, though English may not be widely spoken.
There are no specific areas of the city to avoid. The main safety consideration for visitors is often related to outdoor activities. If you plan a hiking trip in Seoraksan National Park, be sure to wear appropriate footwear, carry water, and stick to the well-marked trails, as the terrain can be challenging.

Summers (June-August) are warm, humid, and rainy, with temperatures often reaching 25-30°C (77-86°F); this is the monsoon season, so waterproof gear is essential.
