Cartagena's most spectacular attraction is the magnificent Roman Theatre Museum, an incredibly well-preserved theatre from the 1st century BC that was only rediscovered in the late 1980s; it's just a 10-minute walk from the pier. For panoramic views of the port and city, take the scenic lift up to Concepción Castle (Castillo de la Concepción), which sits on the highest hill in the old town.

Don't miss the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQVA), located right on the harbor, which showcases fascinating treasures recovered from shipwrecks. You can also explore the city's origins at the Punic Wall Interpretation Centre, the last remaining section of the original Carthaginian defensive wall.

For a change of scenery, consider a trip to Murcia, the region's vibrant capital, located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) inland. The journey takes around 45 minutes by car, and visitors can explore the city's stunning cathedral and lively plazas.

Alternatively, the unique coastal landscape of La Manga del Mar Menor is about a 30-minute drive away. This narrow strip of land separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, offering beautiful beaches and water sports opportunities. Nearby, the quaint fishing village of Cabo de Palos is perfect for enjoying fresh seafood by the sea.

The cruise port in Cartagena, known as the Alfonso XII Pier, boasts one of the best locations in the Mediterranean. Ships dock directly alongside the city's main waterfront promenade, just steps away from the historic city center. No shuttles or transportation are needed to reach the primary attractions, as the main shopping street, Calle Mayor, and the Roman Theatre are less than a 10-minute walk away.

The immediate port area is beautifully landscaped and features cafes, restaurants, and the entrance to the naval and underwater archaeology museums. Ships always dock here, so there is no need for tendering.

The official currency in Cartagena and throughout Spain is the Euro (€). While some tourist-oriented shops might accept US dollars as a courtesy, it is not common, and the exchange rate will be unfavorable. It is highly recommended to use Euros for all transactions.

Cartagena enjoys a Mediterranean climate with over 300 sunny days a year. During the main cruise season from spring to autumn, the weather is typically warm and pleasant. Spring and fall temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C (65°F to 77°F), perfect for sightseeing.

Summers (July and August) can be very hot and dry, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). Rainfall is minimal during these months. Visitors should pack light clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against the strong Spanish sun.

Walking is the best and most popular way to explore Cartagena's compact city center, as nearly all major sights are within a 15-minute radius of the cruise pier. Taxis are readily available near the port terminal for those wishing to travel further, and fares are metered.

For a comprehensive overview of the city, the tourist bus offers a convenient hop-on, hop-off service with stops at key attractions. Another unique transport option is the panoramic lift (Ascensor Panorámico), which provides a quick and scenic ride up to Concepción Castle. Public buses exist but are generally not necessary for cruise visitors focused on the historic core.

The main shopping hub is Calle Mayor, a beautiful pedestrianized street running through the heart of the old town, located just a short walk from the port. Here you'll find a mix of Spanish fashion brands, international retailers, and local artisan shops. For a larger department store experience, El Corte Inglés is a short taxi ride from the port.

Look for local souvenirs such as handcrafted ceramics, leather goods, and gourmet food items like local wine and olive oil. Prices in most stores are fixed. For non-EU residents, tax-free shopping is available at participating stores, allowing you to reclaim the value-added tax (VAT) on your purchases.
