Key Gibraltar Port Information

Top Attractions & Excursions

The most dominant attraction is the majestic The Rock of Gibraltar. Visitors can take a scenic cable car ride or a taxi tour to the top for breathtaking views and encounters with the resident Barbary macaques, Europe's only wild monkeys.

Delve into history by exploring the Great Siege Tunnels, a remarkable network of tunnels excavated by hand during the 18th century. Another must-see is St. Michael's Cave, a stunning natural grotto filled with incredible stalactites and stalagmites, which is even used as a concert hall. All these sites are located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and are easily accessible on a half-day shore excursion.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

While Gibraltar itself offers a full day of activities, venturing into nearby Spain is a popular option. Just across the border is the Spanish town of La Línea de la Concepción, which provides a gateway to the Andalusia region.

For a taste of glamorous coastal life, the resort city of Marbella is about an hour's drive away, famous for its luxurious yachts, high-end boutiques, and beautiful old town. Alternatively, the windswept town of Tarifa, the southernmost point of continental Europe, is a haven for watersports enthusiasts and is located about a 45-minute drive from the port.

Port Location

The Gibraltar Cruise Terminal is conveniently located on the western side of the territory, at the North Mole. It is approximately a 1-mile (1.6 km) walk to Casemates Square, the main entry point to the city center and Main Street. The walk is flat and takes about 15-20 minutes.

For those who prefer not to walk, taxis are readily available at the terminal. Many cruise lines also offer shuttle bus services to the town center for a small fee. Ships dock directly at the pier, so tendering is not required.

Local Currency

The official currency is the Gibraltar Pound (GIP), which is pegged one-to-one with the British Pound Sterling (GBP). British Pounds are accepted everywhere and are interchangeable with local notes and coins. While Euros are widely accepted in most tourist shops and restaurants, the exchange rate may not be favorable, and you will likely receive change in Gibraltar Pounds.

ATMs are plentiful throughout the city for withdrawing local currency. Credit cards are accepted in almost all establishments, making them a convenient option for payment.

Safety Considerations

Gibraltar is a very safe destination with a low crime rate, and visitors can feel secure exploring independently. Standard precautions, such as being aware of your surroundings and keeping valuables secure, are always recommended. The primary safety tip unique to Gibraltar involves the Barbary macaques on the Rock.

These wild animals are known to snatch bags and food, so keep all belongings secure and avoid eating in their presence. Do not feed the monkeys, as it is against the law and can encourage aggressive behavior. Following these simple rules will ensure a pleasant and safe visit.

Weather & Climate

Gibraltar enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The main cruise season from spring through autumn offers pleasant weather, perfect for sightseeing. Summer temperatures (June to August) average between 75-85°F (24-29°C), with abundant sunshine. Spring and autumn are slightly cooler and very comfortable for walking around.

While rainfall is low during the summer, it's wise to pack a light jacket for the windy conditions at the top of the Rock or for cooler evenings. Occasionally, a cloud known as the Levanter can shroud the Rock, but it usually doesn't disrupt activities in the town below.

Getting Around

The main town area of Gibraltar is compact and easily explored on foot. To visit the sights on the Rock, several excellent options are available right from the port. The most popular method is the Rock Tour by taxi, where licensed drivers provide a guided tour of all major sites in about 90 minutes.

Another fantastic option is the Cable Car, which whisks you from the base to the Top of the Rock in just six minutes. For getting around the lower parts of the territory, a modern and efficient public bus system covers most areas. Taxis are also readily available at the cruise terminal and throughout town.

Shopping

Gibraltar is famous for its duty-free shopping, making it a paradise for bargain hunters. The main shopping hub is the pedestrianized Main Street and its surrounding lanes, which are lined with a mix of familiar British high-street brands and local shops.

Popular duty-free purchases include spirits, tobacco, perfumes, cosmetics, and jewelry. Local souvenirs often feature the Rock or Barbary macaques. Prices in shops are fixed, so haggling is not customary. Remember to check your duty-free allowance for your next port of call or home country.
