Welcome to Holyhead, the ruggedly beautiful gateway to the Isle of Anglesey and the majestic landscapes of North Wales. As a key port of call for lines like Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line, this destination offers a captivating alternative to larger city ports. Passengers are drawn to its rich Celtic history, dramatic coastal scenery, and its prime location for exploring ancient castles and the breathtaking peaks of Snowdonia National Park.
A must-see attraction is the stunning South Stack Lighthouse, perched dramatically on a small island accessible by a steep flight of steps, offering incredible views and birdwatching opportunities. For a dose of history, explore the grounds of St Cybi's Church, which is uniquely enclosed within the walls of a 4th-century Roman fort. For those seeking panoramic views, a hike up Holyhead Mountain provides a rewarding vista of the island and the Irish Sea.
Many passengers opt for excursions to the mainland to visit the imposing Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site located approximately a 45-minute drive from the port.

The premier nearby destination is Snowdonia National Park, about an hour's drive from Holyhead. Here, you can experience the dramatic mountains and lakes of Wales, and even take the historic Snowdon Mountain Railway towards the country's highest peak. Another popular choice is the medieval walled town of Conwy, home to the magnificent Conwy Castle and the smallest house in Great Britain, also roughly an hour away.
A shorter, fun stop just 30 minutes from the port is the village with the longest place name in Europe, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, where visitors can grab a photo of the famous train station sign.

Cruise ships dock at the Holyhead Deep Water Berth, which is part of the industrial ferry port. This location is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the main town center. Due to the distance and the nature of the port area, it is not recommended to walk into town.
To accommodate passengers, the port authority and cruise lines almost always provide complimentary shuttle buses that run continuously between the ship and a central drop-off point in town. Ships dock directly at the pier, so tendering is not required.

The official currency in Wales is the British Pound Sterling (GBP), often referred to as the pound (£). While some tourist-focused shops in major UK cities might accept Euros or US Dollars, it is not common practice in Holyhead and the exchange rate will not be favorable.
Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in shops, pubs, and restaurants. For cash, ATMs are readily available in the town center. It is recommended to withdraw or exchange for some pounds for smaller purchases or at establishments that may not accept cards.

Holyhead and the surrounding region of North Wales are considered very safe for tourists. The general crime rate is low, and visitors can feel comfortable exploring independently. The primary safety advice is to take standard precautions, such as being aware of your surroundings and keeping valuables secure, just as you would in any travel destination.
The rugged coastline and hiking trails require caution; always wear appropriate footwear and be mindful of changing weather conditions if you plan outdoor hiking or sightseeing.

The cruise season in Holyhead, typically from spring through early autumn (May to September), sees mild and often unpredictable weather. Average summer temperatures range from 55-65°F (13-18°C), though warmer days are possible. Rain is a frequent visitor to Wales year-round, and it's common to experience sunshine and showers in the same day.
Packing in layers is highly recommended. A waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a sweater or fleece will ensure you are prepared for any weather conditions you might encounter during your visit.

Upon arrival, a complimentary shuttle bus is the primary means of getting from the cruise pier to the town center. From there, Holyhead's town is small and easily walkable. For destinations further afield, taxis are available from the town center, and the Holyhead railway station offers train services to other parts of North Wales, such as Bangor.
Local bus services also connect Holyhead with other towns on the Isle of Anglesey. However, for visiting key attractions like Snowdonia National Park or Caernarfon Castle, booking a ship-sponsored shore excursion or a private tour is the most convenient and time-efficient option.

Shopping in Holyhead is centered around the main thoroughfare, Market Street, in the town center. Here you will find a mix of local shops and national chains. The focus for souvenirs should be on authentic Welsh products.
Look for traditional handcrafted Welsh 'lovespoons', locally made woolens and textiles, slate products, and local preserves or baked goods like Welsh cakes. There is also a large retail park on the outskirts of town, but the more charming and authentic shops are found in the town center itself. Prices are generally fixed, and bargaining is not a common practice.
