One of the most essential sights in Karlskrona is the Naval Museum (Marinmuseum), located on the island of Stumholmen. It's an easy walk from the city center and features fascinating exhibits, including a genuine 1960s submarine you can walk through and a hall of historic ship figureheads. The museum provides a comprehensive look at the history of the Swedish Navy.

In the heart of the city lies Stortorget, the largest square in Scandinavia, which is home to the magnificent baroque church, Fredrikskyrkan (Frederick's Church). Another key sight is the Kungsholm Fortress, a historic sea fortress guarding the entrance to the city. Reaching it requires a short boat trip, often offered as an organized shore excursion, which provides stunning views of the coastline and fortifications.

A popular day trip from Karlskrona is to the idyllic coastal town of Kristianopel, located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the northeast. This charming, fortified town features well-preserved city walls, a beautiful church, and picturesque wooden houses, reachable in about 45 minutes by tour bus or taxi.

Another excellent option is the town of Ronneby, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of the port. A 30-minute train or bus ride will take you to Ronneby Brunnspark, once voted Sweden's most beautiful park. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing walk among historic wooden villas and lush gardens.

For nature lovers, an archipelago boat tour through the thousands of islands and islets of the Blekinge archipelago is a must, showcasing the region's serene natural beauty.

Cruise ships typically dock at the Verkö port terminal, which is an industrial area situated about 10-12 kilometers (6-7 miles) from the Karlskrona city center. Due to the distance, walking to the main attractions is not feasible. Cruise lines almost always provide complimentary or low-cost shuttle bus services to transport passengers to a central drop-off point in the city, usually near Stortorget (the main square).

Taxis are also available but may need to be pre-arranged. The port facility itself has minimal amenities, so most passengers head directly into town. Tendering is not common in Karlskrona; ships berth directly at the pier.

While summers are relatively sunny, rainfall can occur at any time, so it's wise to be prepared. Packing in layers is recommended; bring a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings or for boat excursions on the water, along with a small umbrella or waterproof jacket. The Baltic Sea region does not experience a hurricane season.

From the Verkö cruise pier, the most common and convenient way to reach the city center is via the shuttle bus provided by your cruise line. Taxis can also be hired, but they are less readily available at the pier and may be more expensive. Once in the city center, Karlskrona is very walkable, and most major sights are within easy reach on foot.

For travel to nearby islands, the local archipelago ferries (Skärgårdstrafiken) offer a scenic and authentic way to explore. The local public bus network, managed by Blekingetrafiken, is efficient for reaching destinations further afield, such as the town of Ronneby. Ride-sharing services like Uber are not widely available in this region.

The main shopping district in Karlskrona is centered around the pedestrian streets of Ronnebygatan and Borgmästaregatan. Here you will find a mix of Swedish department stores, independent boutiques, and souvenir shops. The area is compact and easy to explore on foot from the city's main square.

Look for classic Swedish souvenirs such as crystal and glassware from the nearby 'Kingdom of Crystal', wooden handicrafts, and maritime-themed items reflecting the city's naval heritage. Local food specialties can be found at market stalls or specialty food shops. Prices in stores are fixed, and bargaining is not part of the local culture.
