Key Kauai Port Information

Top Attractions & Excursions

One of Kauai's most breathtaking sights is Waimea Canyon, often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Shore excursions to its scenic lookouts are very popular, though it requires a drive of about an hour each way from the port.

Closer to the port, you can take a relaxing riverboat cruise up the Wailua River to visit the famous Fern Grotto, a lava rock grotto draped in lush ferns.

For a perfect beach day, head to Poipu Beach Park on the sunny south shore, about a 30-minute drive, known for its golden sands, calm waters for snorkeling, and frequent appearances by Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Another easily accessible and iconic spot is Wailua Falls, a stunning double-tiered waterfall just a short drive from the port.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

The town of Lihue|1164, Kauai's commercial and government center, is just two miles from the cruise port. Here you can find the Kauai Museum, local restaurants, and the island's main shopping centers.

The resort area of Poipu, located about 30 minutes south, is a popular destination featuring world-class beaches like Poipu Beach Park, upscale shopping at The Shops at Kukuiʻula, and natural attractions like the Spouting Horn blowhole.

For a longer day trip, the charming town of Hanalei on the north shore is about an hour's drive away, offering stunning views of Hanalei Bay and its iconic pier, along with quaint shops and art galleries.

Port Location

Cruise ships dock directly at the pier in Nawiliwili Harbor, so no tendering is required. The port is located just outside Lihue|1164, the island's main town, approximately 2 miles away.

While it is not recommended to walk into town due to distance and road layout, transportation is readily available.

Immediately adjacent to the port area are the Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove Shopping Center, offering a convenient selection of souvenir shops, restaurants, and tour operator check-in points within easy walking distance from the ship.

Local Currency

The official currency in Nawiliwili, as in the rest of the United States, is the US Dollar (USD). Other currencies like the Euro are not accepted.

Cruise passengers will find that credit cards are widely accepted in almost all shops, restaurants, and tour companies.

ATMs are readily available at banks, shopping centers, and convenience stores for cash withdrawals. There is no need for currency exchange for visitors from the US mainland.

Safety Considerations

Nawiliwili and the island of Kauai are generally very safe for tourists, and exploring independently is common. However, it's wise to take standard precautions.

Always lock your rental car and never leave valuables visible, as break-ins can occur at popular trailheads and beaches.

The biggest safety concern is often the ocean; heed all warning signs regarding high surf or strong currents, as conditions can change rapidly.

When hiking, stick to marked trails, bring plenty of water, and be aware that trails can become slippery and dangerous after rain.

Weather & Climate

Kauai enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures ranging from the low 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (21-29°C). As the "Garden Isle," it receives frequent rainfall, but showers are often brief and localized, followed by sunshine.

The rainiest months are typically from November to March, which also brings larger surf to the north shore.

Visitors should pack light clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. A light rain jacket is highly recommended, regardless of the season.

The official hurricane season runs from June to November, but major storms are a rare occurrence.

Getting Around

Several transportation options are available right at the cruise terminal. Rental cars are the most popular choice for independent exploration and can be booked in advance, with shuttles waiting to take you to nearby agency offices.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are also available, but can be costly for longer trips to destinations like Waimea Canyon.

For those who prefer not to drive, a wide variety of pre-booked shore excursions are available, including bus tours to major sights, helicopter tours for aerial views, and boat tours along the breathtaking Na Pali Coast.

Kauai's public bus system exists but is not generally practical for tourists on a tight schedule.

Shopping

Convenient shopping is located just steps from the pier at the Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove Shopping Center, offering a variety of souvenirs, aloha wear, and jewelry.

For a wider selection, the Kukui Grove Center in Lihue|1164 is the island's largest mall.

Look for local specialties such as 100% Kauai-grown coffee from the Kauai Coffee Company, macadamia nuts, locally made hot sauces, and handcrafted goods.

The charming small towns of Kapaa and Hanalei are known for their unique boutiques and art galleries. Prices are typically fixed, and bargaining is not part of the local culture.
