Welcome to Mystery Island, a tiny, uninhabited paradise in the southern archipelago of Vanuatu. This idyllic islet is a favorite stop for cruise lines like P&O Cruises Australia, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean. What makes Mystery Island special is its pristine, untouched nature; it exists almost exclusively for cruise visitors, offering a perfect day of white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and authentic cultural interactions with the friendly locals from neighboring Aneityum island.
The island's appeal lies in its simplicity and raw beauty, providing a quintessential tropical escape where you can disconnect and immerse yourself in the serene environment.
The main attractions on Mystery Island are centered around its incredible natural environment. The top draw is simply enjoying the stunning Pristine Beaches that ring the island; you can easily find your own quiet spot on the soft white sand just steps from where you tender ashore. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for a relaxing swim or some of the best Snorkeling in the South Pacific, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with fish just off the beach.
For a dose of culture, visit the bustling Local Market where villagers from Aneityum sell beautiful handmade crafts, jewelry, and wood carvings. You can also take a short boat ride across the channel for a Cultural Village Tour on Aneityum to get a glimpse into traditional island life. All these activities are immediately accessible from the tender jetty.

Mystery Island's primary nearby destination is the main island of Aneityum, located just a few hundred meters across a clear, shallow channel. Local operators offer short boat trips across for those interested in a village tour or exploring the 'mainland' and its distinct environment. This trip takes only a few minutes and provides a wonderful opportunity to see how the local Ni-Vanuatu people live.
Further afield, but in the same province, is the island of Tanna, famous for the highly accessible and active Mount Yasur volcano. While a visit to Tanna is not feasible during a standard port day from Mystery Island, it is the most significant regional attraction and is sometimes included as a separate port of call on Vanuatu itineraries.

Cruise ships do not dock at Mystery Island but instead anchor offshore in the protected bay between it and the larger island of Aneityum. Passengers are then brought ashore via a short tender boat ride to a small, simple jetty. The island itself is the destination, so there is no city center or downtown to travel to.
Everything is within easy walking distance; the entire island can be circumnavigated on foot in under an hour. On port days, the area around the jetty is transformed with amenities for passengers, including market stalls selling souvenirs, food and drink huts, and booths for renting snorkeling gear.

The official currency of Vanuatu is the Vatu (VUV). However, on Mystery Island, the Australian Dollar (AUD) is the most widely accepted currency by local vendors, as the majority of cruise ships visiting are from Australia. US Dollars may be accepted by some vendors, but AUD in small denominations is highly recommended.
There are no ATMs, banks, or official currency exchange services on this uninhabited island, so it is essential to bring sufficient cash with you. Credit cards are not accepted anywhere on Mystery Island.

Mystery Island is considered an extremely safe and secure port of call. Since the island is uninhabited and only accessible to cruise passengers and registered local vendors on ship days, crime is virtually non-existent. It is perfectly safe to explore the entire island independently.
The main safety considerations are environmental. Be sure to apply high-SPF sunscreen regularly, stay hydrated in the tropical heat, and wear reef shoes to protect your feet from sharp coral. When swimming or snorkeling, be mindful of currents and avoid touching the coral or marine life to protect both yourself and the delicate ecosystem.

Mystery Island enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round. The primary cruise season typically falls within the drier months, from April to October, when you can expect pleasant temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F) with lower humidity and less rainfall. This period offers ideal conditions for beach and water activities.
The wet season runs from November to March, which is also the South Pacific cyclone season. During these months, it is hotter, more humid, and there's a greater chance of tropical downpours. It is advisable to pack light clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, strong sunscreen, and insect repellent regardless of when you visit.

There are no forms of mechanical transportation on Mystery Island itself, such as taxis, buses, or cars. The island is very small and easily explored on foot; you can walk from one side to the other in just a few minutes. The sandy paths that crisscross the island lead to various beaches and the local market area.
The only transportation available is the small motorboats operated by locals that ferry passengers across the narrow channel to the main island of Aneityum for village tours. These can be found near the tender jetty, and a small fee is charged for the short round trip.

Shopping on Mystery Island is a unique and authentic experience centered entirely around the open-air Local Market. On cruise days, vendors from the neighboring island of Aneityum set up stalls near the landing jetty to sell a variety of beautiful, locally made products. This is the perfect place to purchase genuine souvenirs directly from the artisans.
Popular items include hand-woven baskets and bags, sarongs (lavalavas), carved wooden items, and intricate shell and seed jewelry. Cash is essential, with Australian Dollars being the preferred currency. While prices are generally set, you may engage in friendly negotiation if purchasing multiple items.
