The heart of the town is home to the beautiful Fredens Kirke, or the Church of Our Saviour, a distinctive wooden church consecrated in 1909, making it one of the finest in Greenland. Visitors can also explore the Paamiut Museum, which is housed in several historic colonial-era buildings, including the former governor's residence, showcasing local history and culture. The main attraction, however, is the nature surrounding the town; guided boat tours into the fjords offer chances to see humpback and minke whales, seals, and the magnificent white-tailed sea eagles for which the town is named.

Due to its remote location, day trips from Paamiut focus on exploring the stunning natural surroundings by sea rather than visiting other towns. The most popular excursion is a deep exploration of the Kuannersooq Fjord system, a network of waterways flanked by towering mountains and home to abundant wildlife. Another option is a boat trip south towards the Arsuk Fjord, an area renowned for its dramatic landscapes, icebergs calved from nearby glaciers, and historical sites from the Norse period. The weather can change very quickly, and it's common to experience sun, rain, wind, and fog all in one day. Packing in layers is essential, and a waterproof and windproof outer jacket, warm hat, gloves, and sturdy waterproof footwear are highly recommended for any visit.

The town of Paamiut is very small and easily explored on foot. There are no public buses, taxis, or ride-sharing services available for tourists. The main attractions within the settlement are all within a short walking distance from the tender pier. The primary mode of transportation for excursions is by boat, with local operators offering fjord tours and wildlife safaris. These are typically booked through the cruise line as official shore excursions.

Shopping options in Paamiut are limited but offer authentic local products. The main opportunities are found at the local supermarket, which may have a small souvenir section, and occasionally from local artisans selling their wares near the tender pier. Look for unique Greenlandic handicrafts such as tupilaks (small, intricate carvings from bone or antler), sealskin products, and beadwork. This is not a destination for duty-free or luxury shopping; the value lies in acquiring a genuine, locally-made keepsake.
