Within the site, you must explore the haunting ruins of the Port Arthur Penitentiary, the Silent Prison, and the Commandant's House. A short harbor cruise, often included with admission, provides a unique perspective of the settlement.

For wildlife enthusiasts, a short drive brings you to the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo (Taranna Wildlife Park), offering up-close encounters with Tasmania's most famous marsupial. For natural beauty, consider an excursion to the dramatic coastal formations of Tasman National Park, including the Tasman Arch, Devil's Kitchen, and the Tessellated Pavement.

Beyond the main historic site, the Tasman Peninsula is rich with attractions. Just a 25-minute drive away is the Coal Mines Historic Site, another UNESCO-listed convict site that offers a different perspective on the penal system with its underground pits and ruins. This site is less crowded and provides a quieter, reflective experience.

The entirety of Tasman National Park offers incredible scenery and short walks suitable for a port day. Key spots like Remarkable Cave (about a 15-minute drive) and the scenic lookout at Pirates Bay are popular stops on guided tours of the peninsula.

Cruise ships do not dock at a pier in Port Arthur; they anchor in Carnarvon Bay and passengers are tendered ashore. The tender pier is conveniently located directly at the entrance to the Port Arthur Historic Site Visitor Centre. From the landing, it is a very short walk to the main ticket office, cafe, and the start of the historic grounds.

No transportation is needed to explore the primary site, as it is designed to be discovered on foot. Amenities like restrooms, a gift shop, and dining options are all available within the Visitor Centre complex right where you arrive.

The official currency in Port Arthur, and all of Australia, is the Australian Dollar (AUD). U.S. Dollars or other foreign currencies are not accepted for transactions. There is no regular public bus service that aligns with cruise ship schedules, and taxis or ride-sharing services are virtually non-existent in this rural area. Most visitors rely on organized bus tours of the Tasman Peninsula that depart from the visitor centre.

Shopping opportunities in Port Arthur are centered almost exclusively around the Visitor Centre at the Port Arthur Historic Site. The large gift shop offers a wide range of souvenirs, including books on convict history, locally made crafts, Tasmanian food products like honey and jams, and branded apparel. You can also find high-quality items made from Tasmanian timbers like Huon Pine.

This is not a destination for mainstream shopping, as there are no high streets or shopping malls. Prices are fixed, and bargaining is not customary. It is the perfect place to find a unique and meaningful memento of your visit to this historic location.
