One of the island's most significant attractions is the Heraion of Samos, a massive ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera and a UNESCO World Heritage site, located about a 30-minute drive from Vathy. Nearby is the remarkable Tunnel of Eupalinos, a 1-kilometer long aqueduct considered an engineering marvel of the ancient world. Another must-see is the UNESCO-listed town of Pythagoreion, the ancient port of Samos, filled with Greek and Roman ruins. For a more relaxed day, the Archaeological Museum of Samos in Vathy itself houses impressive collections, including a colossal 5-meter kouros statue.

Just a 20-minute drive (10 km) from the port of Vathy is the charming fishing village of Kokkari. It's renowned for its pebble beaches, traditional whitewashed houses, and waterfront tavernas, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon. Further south, about 25 minutes (15 km) from Vathy, is the historic town of Pythagoreion. Built on the ruins of the ancient city, this picturesque harbor town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a delightful atmosphere for strolling, dining, and soaking in history.

Cruise ships dock at the port of Vathy, the capital of Samos. The pier is conveniently located right at the edge of the town center. Passengers can easily walk from the ship to the main promenade, shops, and cafes within 5 to 15 minutes. No shuttles are necessary to explore Vathy itself. The port area has basic amenities, with the full offerings of the town just a short stroll away.

The official currency in Samos is the Euro (EUR). While major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops in tourist areas like Vathy and Pythagoreion, it is advisable to carry some cash. Visitors should pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen to stay comfortable.

From the Vathy port, the town is easily walkable. To explore further, taxis are readily available near the pier. The island's public bus service, KTEL, offers an affordable way to travel between major towns like Vathy, Pythagoreion, and Kokkari, with the main bus station in Vathy a short walk from the port. For more flexibility, car, scooter, and ATV rentals are popular options and can be found in town. Ride-sharing apps like Uber are generally not available on the island, so visitors rely on traditional taxis or organized shore excursions.

The main shopping area for cruise passengers is along the waterfront promenade and the backstreets of Vathy. Samos is famous for its sweet Muscat wine, which is a must-buy souvenir. Other local specialties include high-quality olive oil, thyme honey, and handmade ceramics. A unique local item is the "Pythagorean cup," a clever drinking vessel designed to spill its contents if overfilled. While prices in most shops are fixed, you may find some room for friendly bargaining at smaller artisan stalls or markets.
