Here, you can wander through pristine forest and encounter rare and endangered bird species up close. For those who prefer to stay on the main island, Rakiura National Park offers numerous walking tracks accessible directly from town, such as the short hike to Observation Rock for panoramic views of Halfmoon Bay. Many cruise lines also offer guided kiwi spotting tours, as Stewart Island is one of the best places in the world to see the iconic Southern Brown Kiwi in its natural habitat.

Due to Stewart Island's remote location, day trips focus on its own stunning bays and islets rather than other towns. The most popular and essential nearby destination is Ulva Island (Te Wharawhara), a world-renowned open bird sanctuary reachable by a short water taxi across Paterson Inlet. This is the primary excursion from the main settlement of Oban. The island's connection to the mainland is via a one-hour ferry to the port of Bluff on the South Island, though this is a transit route rather than a typical day-trip destination for cruise passengers visiting the island.

Cruise ships do not dock at Stewart Island; they anchor in Halfmoon Bay and transport passengers to shore via tender boats. The tenders arrive at the main wharf in the center of Oban, the island's only town. The location is exceptionally convenient, as the wharf is the heart of the small community. From the moment you step ashore, you are within immediate walking distance of the town's few shops, cafes, visitor center, and the trailheads for several popular walks. No shuttles or transportation are needed to explore Oban itself.

The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). US Dollars and other foreign currencies are not accepted for transactions. It is highly advisable to bring sufficient NZD cash with you, as banking facilities on the island are extremely limited; there is an ATM, but its reliability can vary. Stewart Island is exceptionally safe, with virtually no crime, and exploring the town of Oban independently is perfectly secure. The primary safety considerations are environmental. The weather can change very quickly, so it's crucial to wear layers and carry waterproof gear, even on a sunny day. If you plan to hike, stick to well-marked trails, wear sturdy footwear, and let someone know your plans. Be cautious near the coastline as conditions can be unpredictable.

The main settlement of Oban is very compact and easily explored on foot. For destinations further afield, options are limited. There is no public bus service or ride-sharing apps like Uber. You can hire rental cars, motor scooters, or e-bikes to explore the island's 28km of roads. Shopping opportunities on Stewart Island are very limited and centered entirely in Oban. You won't find large shopping centers or luxury brands here. Instead, there are a couple of small gift shops offering local crafts, books on island history and wildlife, and kiwi-themed souvenirs. Possum merino wool knitwear, a New Zealand specialty, is also available. Prices are fixed, and there are no duty-free outlets. The Four Square grocery store serves as the main general store for both locals and visitors.
