Welcome to Zeebrugge, your gateway to the fairytale city of Bruges and the historic heart of Flanders. This bustling port on the Belgian coast is a favorite stop for major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and MSC Cruises.
While the port itself is industrial, its true magic lies in its proximity to some of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities. Passengers cherish this stop for the chance to explore cobblestone streets, cruise tranquil canals, and indulge in world-famous Belgian chocolates and beer, all within a short journey from their ship.
The primary attractions are located in nearby Bruges, a city that feels like stepping back in time. The number one destination is the Historic Centre of Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with medieval architecture. A canal boat tour is a must-do, offering picturesque views of the city's charming buildings and bridges from the water.
For a stunning panoramic view of the city, climb the 366 steps of the Belfry of Bruges, an iconic medieval bell tower dominating the central market square. Afterwards, you can visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood or indulge your sweet tooth at Choco-Story, the city's chocolate museum. Most of these sites are easily accessible from the drop-off point for port shuttles, which typically take about 30 minutes to reach Bruges.

The enchanting city of Bruges is the most popular and accessible destination, located just 10 miles (16 km) away, a journey of about 25-30 minutes by bus, train, or car. Its perfectly preserved medieval core makes it the top choice for nearly all cruise visitors.
For those who have visited Bruges before or seek a different experience, the vibrant city of Ghent is another excellent option. Situated about 31 miles (50 km) from Zeebrugge, it can be reached in approximately 45-60 minutes. Ghent offers its own stunning mix of medieval architecture, including the Gravensteen castle and St. Bavo's Cathedral, but with a more dynamic, university-town atmosphere.

The cruise terminal is situated within a large, industrial harbor, several miles from the small town of Zeebrugge and about 10 miles (16 km) from the main destination, Bruges. The immediate port area has very few amenities for tourists, and it is not suitable for exploring on foot.
Transportation is required to go anywhere of interest. Cruise lines universally offer shuttle buses (often for a fee) directly to a central location in Bruges. Taxis and pre-booked private tours are also available. Ships dock directly at the pier, so there is no need for tendering.

The official currency in Belgium is the Euro (€). While some tourist shops in major cities might accept US dollars, you will receive a poor exchange rate, so it is not recommended.
Credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in restaurants, shops, and museums in Bruges and Ghent. For small purchases or market stalls, it's wise to carry some Euro cash. ATMs are readily available in the city centers but are scarce at the port terminal itself.

Zeebrugge, and more importantly its popular excursion destinations like Bruges and Ghent, are considered very safe for tourists. Violent crime is rare, and visitors generally feel comfortable exploring independently during the day.
The main concern, as in any major tourist area, is petty theft such as pickpocketing. Be extra vigilant with your belongings in crowded places like the market squares, train stations, and popular photo spots. No specific areas need to be avoided, and a guided tour is a matter of preference for convenience rather than a necessity for safety.

Belgium has a temperate maritime climate, meaning the weather can be unpredictable. During the main cruise season from late spring to early autumn (May to September), expect mild to warm temperatures, typically ranging from 55°F to 72°F (13°C to 22°C).
Rain is possible at any time of year, and it's common to experience several weather conditions in a single day. Packing in layers is highly recommended, and a waterproof jacket or umbrella is an essential item to bring along, regardless of the forecast. The region is not affected by a hurricane season.

The most common and convenient way to get from the port to Bruges is by using the cruise line shuttle service, which drops passengers at a dedicated bus park just outside the city center. From there, it's a short walk to all the main attractions.
Taxis are available at the port but can be quite expensive for the 30-minute journey. For public transport, you can take the Belgian coastal tram (Kusttram) from a stop near the port to a larger town like Blankenberge, and then take a train to Bruges. While cost-effective, this option is more time-consuming and complicated for those on a tight schedule. Ride-sharing services like Uber are not always readily available in the immediate port area.

The best shopping is found in the charming streets of Bruges. The main shopping streets, such as Steenstraat and Geldmuntstraat, are lined with both international brands and local boutiques. The most sought-after souvenirs are distinctly Belgian.
Look for exquisite handmade lace, intricate tapestries, and of course, world-famous Belgian chocolate from chocolatiers like Dumon or The Chocolate Line. Beer enthusiasts will find hundreds of varieties of Belgian beer to take home. Prices in shops are fixed and not open to negotiation. While there are no specific duty-free zones in the city for cruise passengers, the variety and quality of local goods make for a rewarding shopping experience.
