Most of Ajaccio's key attractions are conveniently located within walking distance of the cruise terminal. A top priority for history buffs is the Maison Bonaparte, the ancestral home and birthplace of Napoleon, now a national museum. Just a few blocks away, you can visit the Ajaccio Cathedral, the baroque church where Napoleon was baptized. For a scenic excursion, a popular boat tour or a 30-minute bus ride will take you to the Îles Sanguinaires (Bloody Islands), a small archipelago famed for its dramatic red sunsets and Genoese tower.

For those looking to explore beyond the city, the prehistoric site of Filitosa is about an hour's drive south and offers a fascinating glimpse into Corsica's ancient past with its carved megalithic statues. A shorter trip across the bay via a 20-minute ferry takes you to the resort town of Porticcio, known for its beautiful sandy beaches and watersports. For a full-day excursion showcasing Corsica's breathtaking scenery, consider a trip to the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage site of stunning red rock formations, though be aware it is a 1.5 to 2-hour drive each way.

The cruise port in Ajaccio is ideally situated right in the city center, adjacent to the marina and the old town. Most ships dock at the Quai L'Herminier, which means passengers can step off the ship and begin exploring immediately on foot. Key attractions, shops, and restaurants are just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the pier, eliminating the need for shuttles or taxis to reach the city's heart. While most ships dock, larger vessels may occasionally anchor in the bay and use tenders to bring passengers ashore, which still drops them off at the central marina.

For authentic local products, head to the Marché Central, the daily morning market near the port, to find local cheeses like 'brocciu', charcuterie, olive oil, and honey. Popular souvenirs include Napoleon memorabilia, artisan-made Corsican knives, and beauty products made from local 'immortelle' flowers. Prices in shops are fixed, so bargaining is not customary.
