Key Antalya Port Information

Top Attractions & Excursions

A visit to Antalya is incomplete without exploring Kaleiçi, the city's beautifully restored Old Town. Wander through its narrow, winding streets, admire the Ottoman-era houses, and see landmarks like Hadrian's Gate and the historic Clock Tower. For a deep dive into the region's rich history, the Antalya Museum (Antalya Muzesi) is a must-see, housing an impressive collection of artifacts from nearby archaeological sites. If you prefer a day by the sea, the expansive Konyaalti Beach (Konyaalti Plaji) offers stunning mountain views and is just a short taxi ride from the port. For a unique natural spectacle, consider an excursion to the Düden Waterfalls, where powerful cascades dramatically meet the Mediterranean Sea.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

Antalya is a fantastic base for exploring some of Turkey's most impressive ancient sites. The well-preserved Roman city of Perge, with its colonnaded streets and stadium, is just a 30-minute drive from the city and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Further afield, about an hour's drive away, is the ancient city of Aspendos, home to one of the best-preserved Roman theaters in the world, which is still used for performances today. For a different experience, the ancient town of Side (pronounced see-deh), located about 1.5 hours away, combines stunning ruins, including the Temple of Apollo, with beautiful beaches and a charming seaside town.

Port Location

The cruise port, Port Akdeniz, is located approximately 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) west of Antalya's historic city center, Kaleiçi. Due to the distance, walking to the main attractions is not feasible for most visitors. Cruise lines typically offer shuttle bus services to the city center for a fee. Alternatively, taxis are readily available just outside the port terminal. The port area itself is primarily industrial and has limited amenities, so most passengers head directly into the city to begin their explorations. Ships dock directly at the pier, so tendering is not required.

Local Currency

The official currency in Antalya is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While some tourist-oriented shops and restaurants may accept Euros or US Dollars, you will get a much better rate by paying in the local currency. ATMs are widely available, including near the port and throughout the city center, making it easy to withdraw Lira. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, larger restaurants, and modern shopping malls. For smaller purchases at local markets or in taxis, it is essential to have cash on hand.

Safety Considerations

Antalya is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, and visitors can feel comfortable exploring the main areas independently. As in any popular tourist destination, it is wise to be aware of your surroundings and watch out for pickpockets, especially in crowded places like the Antalya Bazaar. Use licensed taxis and agree on a fare beforehand or ensure the meter is running. While exploring independently is common, booking a guided shore excursion can be a convenient and safe way to visit ancient ruins located outside the city.

Weather & Climate

Antalya enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with long, hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The main cruise season from late spring through autumn offers beautiful, sunny weather perfect for sightseeing and beach activities. Summer temperatures, particularly in July and August, can be very hot, often exceeding 35°C (95°F). Spring and autumn provide more moderate and comfortable temperatures. Rainfall is minimal during the summer months, so you can generally expect clear skies. Be sure to pack light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sun.

Getting Around

Taxis are the most convenient way to get from the cruise port to the city center and other attractions, and they are readily available at the terminal. Always confirm the fare before starting your journey. Many cruise lines also provide shuttle bus services to a central drop-off point for a fee. Once in the city, the historic Old Town (Kaleiçi) is very walkable. For travel within the city, Antalya has a modern tram system, known as Antray, which is an efficient way to get around, though it does not connect directly to the cruise port. Ride-sharing apps are not as prevalent, with local taxi apps like BiTaksi being more common.

Shopping

Antalya offers a diverse shopping experience, from traditional markets to modern malls. For authentic souvenirs, head to the bustling Antalya Bazaar or the charming boutiques within the Old Town (Kaleiçi). Here you can find local specialties such as leather goods, handmade ceramics, Turkish carpets, spices, and delicious Turkish delight. Haggling is expected in the bazaars, so be prepared to negotiate for a good price. For a more contemporary shopping experience with fixed prices and international brands, visit the Mall of Antalya.
