Dunkirk, France

Dunkirk Cruise Port Guide

Welcome to Dunkirk, a port city forged by history and resilience on the coast of Northern France. Increasingly visited by lines like Viking Ocean Cruises and MSC Cruises, this destination offers a unique and poignant alternative to more traditional European ports.

Passengers are drawn to its profound World War II history, particularly the dramatic story of Operation Dynamo, and its wide, sandy beaches that were the stage for this historic event.

Beyond its wartime legacy, Dunkirk serves as a gateway to the charming landscapes of French Flanders and the historic cities of Belgium, making it a compelling stop for history buffs and curious travelers alike.

Key Dunkirk Port Information

🏛️ Top Attractions & Excursions

The most significant attraction is the Dunkirk 1940 Museum (Mémorial du Souvenir), which provides a comprehensive and moving account of Operation Dynamo and the Battle of Dunkirk. It is located near the beach where the evacuation took place.

For a different perspective on the city's heritage, visit the Musée Portuaire (Port Museum). Housed in a 19th-century tobacco warehouse, it details Dunkirk's long and rich maritime history.

A short walk away is the Belfry of Saint-Éloi Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the port, and the English Channel.

Don't miss a walk along Plage de Malo-les-Bains, the vast sandy beach that was the primary location for the WWII evacuation. Today, it's a lovely promenade lined with restaurants and cafes.

For those interested in World War I history, the Belgian city of Ypres (Ieper) is approximately a 50-minute drive away. Here, you can visit poignant sites like the Menin Gate Memorial and the In Flanders Fields Museum.

📍 Port Location

The cruise ship terminal, known as the Terminal des Flandres, is located within Dunkirk's large industrial and commercial port, Port de Dunkerque.

It is situated several kilometers east of the main city center, approximately a 10-15 minute drive away. Due to the industrial nature of the surroundings, it is not safe or practical for passengers to walk from the ship to the town.

Consequently, cruise lines almost always provide shuttle bus services to transport passengers to a central drop-off point, such as Place Jean Bart. The terminal itself is functional with basic facilities, but does not have tourist amenities, shops, or restaurants.

Ships dock directly at the quay, so tendering is not required.

💰 Local Currency

The official currency in Dunkirk, France is the Euro (€).

While some tourist-focused shops might occasionally accept US dollars, it is not common, and the exchange rate will be unfavorable. It is highly recommended to use Euros for all transactions.

ATMs (distributeurs automatiques de billets) are widely available throughout the city center, connected to major international networks. Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops.

⚠️ Safety Considerations

Dunkirk is generally considered a safe city for tourists to explore. The main city center and tourist areas are welcoming, and visitors can feel comfortable exploring independently during the day.

As in any city, it's wise to practice standard safety precautions: be aware of your surroundings, keep valuables secure, and watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas like markets or public transport hubs.

The industrial port area where cruise ships dock is not intended for pedestrians; always use the official cruise line shuttle to travel between the ship and the city. Exploring the city on your own is safe, but for a deeper understanding of the area's complex history, a guided historical tour is highly recommended.

☀️ Weather & Climate

Dunkirk has a temperate maritime climate, heavily influenced by the North Sea. The main cruise season, from late spring through early autumn, generally sees mild and pleasant weather, though conditions can be changeable.

Summer temperatures (June to August) typically range from 15°C to 22°C (60°F to 72°F). However, the coastal location means there is often a breeze, which can make it feel cooler.

Rainfall can occur at any time of year, so it is always advisable to pack layers, including a light jacket and a waterproof coat or umbrella, even in summer. The weather is rarely extreme, and there is no hurricane season to consider in this part of Europe.

🚕 Getting Around

Cruise lines typically provide a complimentary or paid shuttle bus service from the cruise terminal to a central point in the city, as the port is located in an industrial area and is not pedestrian-friendly.

Once in the city center, Dunkirk boasts an excellent and entirely free public bus network called DK'Bus Marine, making it very easy to get around.

Taxis are available but are less common to hail on the street; it's best to find them at designated ranks or have a restaurant or hotel call one for you. Ride-sharing services like Uber may have limited availability. For exploring the wider region, regional trains connect Dunkirk to cities like Lille and Calais.

🛍️ Shopping

The primary shopping area in Dunkirk is concentrated in the city center, particularly along the streets radiating from the main square, Place Jean Bart, and in the Centre Marine shopping mall.

For authentic local souvenirs, look for maritime-themed items, products related to the famous Dunkirk Carnival, and local delicacies. Regional specialties include artisanal beers, rich cheeses like Bergues, and sweet treats such as 'gaufres fourrées' (thin waffles with a sweet filling).

Prices in shops are fixed, and bargaining is not customary. While you can find a wide variety of goods, Dunkirk is more known for its local character than for luxury or duty-free shopping.
