The city's most prominent landmark is the magnificent Matsuyama Castle, one of Japan's twelve original surviving castles. Perched on a steep hill in the city center, it offers panoramic views and a fascinating glimpse into samurai history, accessible via a scenic ropeway or chairlift. A must-do onsen experience awaits at Dogo Onsen Honkan, one of Japan's oldest and most famous hot springs, whose historic main building is a cultural treasure. Nearby, you can explore Ishiteji Temple, an important stop on the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage, featuring an intriguing collection of statues and caves. Most key sights are within a 30-45 minute tram or bus ride from the port area.

For a journey back in time, consider a day trip to the historic town of Uchiko, located about 60 minutes away by train. Uchiko is renowned for its beautifully preserved street of traditional merchant homes from the Meiji era, a traditional candlemaking museum, and a classic Kabuki theater. Just a short train ride from Uchiko is the charming castle town of Ozu, often called the 'Little Kyoto of Iyo.' The Matsuyama cruise port (Matsuyama Gaiko) is located approximately 9 kilometers (about 5.5 miles) west of the main city center. It is not within walking distance of the primary attractions, so transportation is required. Cruise lines typically provide shuttle buses to a central point in the city, such as the Okaido shopping arcade or near Matsuyama City Station. Taxis and public transportation are also readily available from the port. The port terminal itself has basic facilities, but visitors will find the vast majority of shops, restaurants, and amenities in the downtown area.

Matsuyama boasts an excellent and user-friendly public transportation system, primarily centered around its extensive tram network. From the port, visitors can take a short walk to Takahama Station and catch the Iyo Railway line to Matsuyama City Station, the city's central hub. From there, the city trams provide easy access to all major attractions, including Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen. A one-day tram pass offers great value for cruise passengers. A popular scenic train ride is the 'Botchan Train,' a diesel-powered replica of an old-fashioned steam train that runs on key tourist routes. Taxis are also readily available at the port and around the city.

The premier shopping destination in Matsuyama is the Okaido Shopping Arcade, a long, covered pedestrian street in the heart of the city. Connected to the adjacent Gintengai arcade, this area is filled with department stores, boutiques, souvenir shops, and restaurants. For unique local souvenirs, look for Tobe-yaki pottery, known for its distinctive blue and white designs, and products made from Iyo-kasuri indigo-dyed fabric.
