Just a short drive away is the village of Alter do Chão, frequently referred to as the "Caribbean of the Amazon" due to its stunning white sand beaches and freshwater islands. For nature lovers, a trip to the Tapajós National Forest offers a chance to hike among giant sumaúma trees and spot local wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds. Many visitors also enjoy a stroll along the Orla de Santarém, a developed waterfront promenade perfect for watching the sunset.

While strictly a "nearby" town, Alter do Chão is the primary excursion destination, located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) away, taking roughly 45 minutes by car or bus to reach. Another fascinating historical site is Belterra, a former rubber plantation town established by Henry Ford, which is about an hour and a half drive south. These destinations allow passengers to escape the city bustle and experience the distinct history and natural beauty of the Pará region within a single day.

Cruise ships typically dock at the long commercial pier, which is located about 2-3 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the main city center and the waterfront promenade. While it is technically possible to walk, the intense heat and humidity usually make a taxi or shuttle bus the preferred option for reaching downtown. Occasionally, if the river levels vary significantly or the commercial berths are occupied, ships may anchor and tender passengers to the shore. The immediate area around the commercial pier is industrial, so heading towards the center is necessary for shops and amenities.

Taxis are the most convenient way to get from the port to the city center or nearby attractions; it is important to agree on a fare before starting the journey as meters may not always be used. Ride-sharing apps are becoming more common in Brazil, but availability can vary in this region. For the adventurous, local buses and river boat taxis are available to reach beaches like Alter do Chão, though cruise lines usually organize comfortable shuttle buses to the town center.

Visitors should head to the Mercado Modelo or local artisan shops to find unique Amazonian handicrafts. Popular souvenirs include Tapajônica ceramics, which feature intricate geometric designs inspired by ancient indigenous culture, as well as woven baskets and jewelry made from local seeds and natural rubber. Prices in markets are often negotiable, so a bit of friendly bargaining is expected. Duty-free shopping is generally not a major feature here compared to Caribbean ports.
