Shimizu Port Guide

A visit to Shimizu is incomplete without experiencing the ethereal beauty of Miho no Matsubara. This seven-kilometer stretch of pine-lined coast is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty and offers legendary views of Mount Fuji across the bay, located about 20 minutes from the port by taxi.

For a spiritual journey, ascend the Nihondaira Plateau via ropeway to reach the magnificent Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the original burial place of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. This vibrant and intricately decorated shrine is a National Treasure.

Another excellent option is to visit the Nihondaira Plateau itself, which provides some of the most spectacular panoramic vistas of the city, the port, Suruga Bay, and Mount Fuji. The area also hosts the Shizuoka Municipal Nihondaira Zoo, making it a versatile destination for different interests.

Just a short journey away is the prefectural capital, Shizuoka City, easily reachable in about 20-25 minutes by train. Here, you can explore the ruins of Sumpu Castle Park, the former residence of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, and enjoy bustling shopping streets.

For those seeking more natural beauty, the Izu Peninsula is a popular day trip destination, though it requires a bit more travel time. Known for its hot springs (onsen), beautiful coastlines, and wasabi farms, it offers a deeper dive into the region's diverse landscapes.

Cruise ships typically dock at Hinode Pier, which is conveniently located within the port area. The terminal is part of a large entertainment complex called S-Pulse Dream Plaza, offering shops, restaurants, and even a Ferris wheel right where you disembark.

Downtown Shimizu and the JR Shimizu Station are about a 10-minute taxi ride or a 25-minute walk from the pier. Many cruise lines offer complimentary shuttle buses to the train station, providing easy access to the wider region. Tendering is not typically required at this port.

The official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While major credit cards are widely accepted in department stores, hotels, and larger restaurants, carrying some cash is highly recommended for smaller shops, local markets, and public transportation.

US Dollars and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted for transactions. ATMs that accept international cards can be found at the port terminal, post offices, and convenience stores like 7-Eleven. Currency exchange services are also available at the cruise terminal upon arrival.

Japan is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, and Shimizu is no exception. Violent crime is extremely rare, making it very safe for tourists to explore independently, even after dark.

The primary safety consideration is to be mindful of your surroundings in crowded areas to prevent petty theft, though this is also uncommon. Local people are generally very helpful and polite, so do not hesitate to ask for directions if you are lost.

Shimizu has a humid, subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The main cruise season in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offers the most pleasant weather, with mild to warm temperatures and clear skies ideal for viewing Mount Fuji.

Summers (June-August) are hot and humid, with a rainy season typically occurring in June and July. It's also important to be aware that the typhoon season runs from late summer into autumn, which can occasionally impact itineraries. Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, and be prepared for rain, especially in the summer months.

Getting around Shimizu is convenient thanks to an efficient public transportation network. From the port, you can take a taxi, a local bus, or the complimentary cruise shuttle to JR Shimizu Station.

From the station, the JR Tokaido Main Line provides quick access to nearby Shizuoka City. For local sightseeing, the Shizutetsu train line and local buses are excellent options. A unique way to see the bay is by using the Suruga Bay Ferry or the water bus, which connects the port to Miho no Matsubara.

Taxis are readily available but can be more expensive than public transport. Ride-sharing services like Uber are not common in this region.

Excellent shopping opportunities begin right at the pier at S-Pulse Dream Plaza, a multi-story mall with a variety of stores, a supermarket, and souvenir shops. Here you can find local goods without having to travel far from the ship.

For a more traditional experience, head to the Shimizu Fish Market, Kashi-no-Ichi, near the port, to see fresh seafood and enjoy some of the best sushi in Japan. The main shopping arcades in downtown Shimizu, such as the Miyuki-dori Shopping Street, offer a mix of modern and traditional shops.

Look for local specialties like high-quality green tea, wasabi-flavored snacks, seafood products, and small crafts. Prices are fixed, and bargaining is not customary.
