Top Attractions & Excursions

The heart of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso, a bustling central square perfect for people-watching from a cafe and soaking up the local atmosphere. Just a short walk away, you'll find the serene Chiostro di San Francesco, a 14th-century cloister with a beautiful mix of architectural styles and a tranquil garden. For the best views in town, head to the Villa Comunale di Sorrento, public gardens that offer panoramic vistas of the coastline and Mount Vesuvius. Don't miss the chance to immerse yourself in the town's signature scent at I Giardini di Cataldo, a historic lemon grove where you can tour the gardens and sample fresh limoncello.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

Sorrento is the perfect base for exploring some of Italy's most iconic sites. A short 30-minute train ride on the Circumvesuviana line will take you to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, the Roman city famously preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Another popular day trip is the glamorous island of Capri, just a 20-30 minute hydrofoil ride from Sorrento's marina, known for its Blue Grotto and designer shops. You can also explore the stunning Amalfi Coast by bus or ferry, visiting picturesque cliffside villages like Positano (approx. 45 minutes) and Amalfi (approx. 90 minutes).

Port Location

Cruise ships arriving in Sorrento anchor offshore and use tender boats to bring passengers to the Marina Piccola. This marina is situated at the bottom of the steep cliffs on which the main town is built. To reach the town center and Piazza Tasso, which is about 1 kilometer away uphill, you have several options. You can take a steep but scenic footpath, use the public bus service, or take the convenient elevator (Sorrento Lift) that connects the marina area with the Villa Comunale di Sorrento gardens at the top. The marina itself has a few cafes and ticket offices for ferries, but most amenities are located in the main town above.

Local Currency

The official currency in Sorrento, as in all of Italy, is the Euro (€). While major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, it is advisable to carry some cash for smaller purchases, bus tickets, or market stalls. ATMs, known locally as 'Bancomat', are readily available throughout the town center for withdrawing Euros. It is not common to use US dollars for transactions, so exchanging currency or using an ATM upon arrival is recommended.

Safety Considerations

Sorrento is considered a very safe destination for tourists, and exploring independently is generally not a problem. However, as in any popular tourist area, visitors should be mindful of their belongings and watch out for pickpockets in crowded places like public transportation and busy squares. The main safety concern is often the traffic; streets can be narrow and winding with fast-moving scooters, so always be cautious when walking. There are no specific areas to avoid, and the town is welcoming to visitors day and night.

Weather & Climate

Sorrento enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate, making it an ideal cruise destination for much of the year. The main cruise season from late spring through early autumn (May to October) sees warm to hot, sunny weather, with average high temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F). Rainfall is minimal during the summer months. Visitors should pack light clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. While winters are mild, they can be wetter, so a light jacket or umbrella is recommended for off-season visits.

Getting Around

Once you ascend from the tender port at Marina Piccola, the compact center of Sorrento is easily walkable. For destinations further afield, the SITA bus company provides extensive service along the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast, though buses can be crowded in peak season. The Circumvesuviana train line is a cheap and efficient way to reach Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples. Ferries and hydrofoils are the best way to visit the island of Capri, with frequent departures from Marina Piccola. Taxis are available but are generally more expensive than public transport options.

Shopping

Shopping in Sorrento is a delightful experience, with the main thoroughfare, Corso Italia, offering a mix of high-end fashion and local boutiques. For more traditional souvenirs, explore the narrow, charming lanes of the old town, particularly Via San Cesareo. Sorrento is famous for its limoncello liqueur, and you'll find numerous shops offering free samples. Other local specialties include intricate inlaid woodwork (intarsia), handmade leather sandals, and colorful ceramics.
