Key Symi Port Information
Top Attractions & Excursions
A visit to Symi is incomplete without exploring the majestic Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis, located on the southern tip of the island, which houses a famous holy icon and two fascinating museums. For those staying near the harbor, climbing the Kali Strata, a stone staircase of over 500 steps, leads to the historic upper town of Chorio and offers breathtaking views of the bay. You can also visit the Symi Archaeological Museum in Chorio to delve into local history, or relax at the serene Nos Beach, which is just a short walk from the main pier.

Nearby Cities & Attractions
While the island itself is small, cruise passengers can take a quick 15-minute boat ride to the secluded bay of St. George Disalona Beach, famous for its massive sheer cliff face and crystal-clear waters. Alternatively, the nearby island of Rhodes is located approximately 23 miles to the south, accessible in under an hour by high-speed ferry for those wishing to explore its medieval Old Town. Another popular option is a short coastal boat trip to the tiny, uninhabited islet of Sesklia, offering pristine snorkeling spots and quiet pebble beaches.

Port Location
Cruise ships visiting Symi typically drop anchor in the deep waters of Gialos Harbor and transport passengers to the pier via tender boats. Once you step off the tender, you are immediately in the heart of the town, surrounded by cafes, tavernas, and boutique shops. No shuttle buses or taxis are necessary to reach the main downtown area, as everything in the harbor is easily reachable on foot.

Local Currency
The official currency used in Symi is the Euro (EUR). While major establishments and tourist shops accept international credit cards, it is highly recommended to carry some cash for small purchases at local bakeries or for boat taxis. Several ATMs are conveniently located along the harbor front, but dedicated currency exchange booths are limited, so exchanging money beforehand is advised.

Safety Considerations
Symi is an exceptionally safe and peaceful destination with virtually non-existent crime rates, making it perfect for independent exploration. The primary safety considerations are physical, such as wearing sturdy shoes to navigate the steep, slippery stone steps of the Kali Strata and staying hydrated under the Mediterranean sun. Standard travel precautions against occasional petty pickpocketing in crowded areas are sufficient, and solo travelers can feel entirely secure wandering the island.

Weather & Climate
Symi enjoys a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. During the peak cruise season from May to October, daily temperatures average between 25°C and 35°C (77°F to 95°F), with almost no rainfall. Visitors should pack lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and plenty of water to cope with the midday heat.

Getting Around
Because the island is highly pedestrianized, the most popular way to reach remote beaches is by using a local boat taxi service operating directly from the harbor. A public bus runs regularly between the harbor and the upper village of Chorio, as well as to the bay of Pedi, costing only a few Euros. A small fleet of traditional taxis is also available near the harbor, but they are limited in number, so walking and water transport remain the preferred options.

Shopping
Shopping in Symi is a delightful experience centered around the harbor's narrow streets, where you can buy high-quality, natural sea sponges, which the island is historically famous for. Other local specialties include hand-carved wooden items, locally produced herbs, honey, and artisanal leather sandals. Prices are generally fixed and reasonable, though polite negotiation might be acceptable at smaller market stalls, and while there are no large duty-free malls, the unique local crafts make for excellent souvenirs.
