Top Attractions & Excursions

A must-see for many visitors is a journey along a portion of the spectacular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a unique mountain sightseeing route that showcases stunning seasonal landscapes, accessible via a combination of cable cars, buses, and ropeways. For a dose of culture, the Gokayama Ainokura Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about a 60-90 minute drive and features traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs. Closer to the city, the Toyama Glass Art Museum is a stunning architectural marvel housing a world-class collection of contemporary glass art. Another popular excursion is to the nearby city of Takaoka to visit the Zuiryuji Temple, a designated National Treasure of Japan known for its powerful Zen Buddhist architecture.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

The historic city of Kanazawa is a highly recommended day trip, located approximately one hour away by train. It is renowned for Kenrokuen, one of Japan's most beautiful landscape gardens, as well as well-preserved samurai and geisha districts. Another popular option is the mountain town of Takayama, roughly 90 minutes away by train, which offers a glimpse into old Japan with its beautifully maintained wooden merchant houses and morning markets. For those seeking more dramatic mountain scenery, a trip on the Kurobe Gorge Railway offers breathtaking views of the steep, forested gorge, with the journey to the train's departure point taking about an hour from the port.

Port Location

The Fushiki-Toyama Port is located in an industrial area, a significant distance from the main city center. The cruise pier is about a 25-30 minute drive to downtown Toyama and is actually closer to the city of Takaoka. Due to the distance and lack of pedestrian access to attractions, transportation is essential. Cruise lines almost always provide complimentary shuttle buses to either Toyama Station or a central downtown location. There are very few amenities like shops or restaurants in the immediate port area, so planning is required. Ships typically dock directly at the pier, and tendering is not common.

Local Currency

The official currency in Toyama is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While major hotels or pre-booked tour operators might accept US Dollars, it is not common practice in shops, restaurants, or for local transport; you should plan on using yen for most transactions. ATMs are widely available, particularly at post offices and 7-Eleven convenience stores, which are reliable for foreign card withdrawals. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, department stores, and larger restaurants in the city, but it's wise to carry sufficient cash for smaller shops, local markets, and rural destinations.

Safety Considerations

Toyama, like all of Japan, is an exceptionally safe destination with a very low crime rate. Cruise passengers can feel very secure when exploring independently, both during the day and at night. The primary safety consideration is to be mindful of traffic, as Japan drives on the left-hand side of the road. There are no specific areas to avoid, and local people are generally polite and helpful, though English may not be widely spoken outside of major tourist sites. Standard precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, are always recommended, but the risk of theft is minimal.

Weather & Climate

The main cruise season for Toyama is during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), which offer the most pleasant weather. In spring, temperatures are mild, ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F), and it's the famous cherry blossom season. Autumn is similarly comfortable, with temperatures between 15-25°C (59-77°F) and stunning fall foliage, especially in the mountains. Summers are hot and humid with a rainy season, while winters see heavy snowfall. Passengers should pack layers, including a light jacket and a waterproof outer layer, as weather in the mountains can change quickly. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring.

Getting Around

The most convenient way to leave the port is via the shuttle bus provided by your cruise line, which typically takes you to Toyama Station. From there, the city and surrounding region are well-connected. Toyama has an efficient tram system for getting around the city center. For regional travel, the JR train network is excellent, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) connecting to Kanazawa in under 30 minutes. Taxis are available but can be quite expensive for longer distances. Ride-sharing services like Uber are not prevalent, so it's best to rely on public transport or organized shore excursions.

Shopping

The best shopping is found in the area surrounding Toyama Station, which features department stores like Daiwa and the Marier building. For a more traditional experience, explore the Sogawa Base shopping arcade for local shops and eateries. Toyama is famous for its exquisite glassware, and visitors can purchase unique pieces at the Toyama Glass Art Museum gift shop or local galleries. Other popular souvenirs include 'masuzushi' (trout sushi pressed in a wooden box), traditional Takaoka copperware, and a variety of sake from local breweries. Prices are fixed, and bargaining is not practiced in Japan. Look for tax-free shopping signs in larger stores for potential savings if you present your passport.
