La Rochelle Cruise Port Guide

The heart of the city is its Old Port (Vieux Port), guarded by the magnificent La Rochelle Towers (Tours de La Rochelle). These three 14th-century maritime fortifications offer panoramic views and a deep dive into the city's history.

Just a short walk from the harbor is the world-renowned Aquarium La Rochelle, one of Europe's largest private aquariums, showcasing thousands of marine species from around the globe.

For a unique maritime adventure, consider a boat trip to see the legendary Fort Boyard standing guard in the sea between the Île d'Aix and the Île d'Oléron. You can also explore the charming old town, with its distinctive arcaded streets perfect for a leisurely stroll.

A highly popular day trip is to the picturesque Île de Ré, a beautiful island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Known for its sandy beaches, charming villages like Saint-Martin-de-Ré, and extensive network of cycling paths, it is located about 30-45 minutes from the port by car.

For connoisseurs, a journey inland to the town of Cognac is a must. Approximately a 90-minute drive away, this town is the heart of the world-famous brandy industry, offering numerous opportunities for distillery tours and tastings at prestigious houses like Hennessy and Rémy Martin.

Cruise ships typically dock at the commercial Port de la Pallice, which is located approximately 6 kilometers (about 4 miles) northwest of La Rochelle's historic city center and the Old Port (Vieux Port).

Due to the distance, walking to the main attractions is not feasible. Cruise lines almost always provide complimentary or for-fee shuttle buses that drop passengers off near the tourist information office.

Taxis are also available at the pier. The port area itself is industrial and does not have tourist amenities, so transportation into the city is necessary.

The official currency in La Rochelle, as in all of France, is the Euro (€). U.S. Dollars are not accepted for transactions.

The best shopping in La Rochelle is found within the historic city center, particularly along the charming arcaded streets like Rue du Palais and Rue des Merciers. Here you'll find a mix of independent boutiques, well-known French brands, and artisanal craft shops.

Look for local specialties such as Cognac, Pineau des Charentes (a regional fortified wine), and fleur de sel (hand-harvested sea salt) from the nearby Île de Ré. The bustling central market (Marché Central) is a fantastic place to find local delicacies and food products. Prices are generally fixed in shops, so haggling is not customary.
