Key Port Elizabeth Port Information

Top Attractions & Excursions

For an unforgettable wildlife experience, a shore excursion to Addo Elephant National Park is a top choice. Located about an hour from the port, this vast sanctuary is home to one of the densest populations of African elephants in the world, as well as lions, buffalo, and rhinos.

If time is short, the Kragga Kamma Game Park offers a fantastic alternative just 30 minutes away. Here, you can easily spot animals like white rhinos, giraffes, and zebras roaming freely in a coastal forest and grassland habitat.

For a dose of local history and culture, the Donkin Reserve in the heart of the old city is a must-see. This open public space features a stone pyramid, a historic lighthouse, and panoramic views of the bay, all within a 10-minute drive from the port.

Nearby Cities & Attractions

The premier nearby destination is the world-renowned Addo Elephant National Park, approximately 70 kilometers (45 miles) north of the port. A full-day trip, taking about an hour to drive each way, offers a genuine African safari experience with opportunities to see elephants and other members of the "Big Five."

For a different coastal vibe, the famous surfing town of Jeffreys Bay is about 75 kilometers (47 miles) to the west. Reachable in about an hour's drive, it's known for its legendary waves, surf-themed shops, and laid-back beach atmosphere, making it a great choice for surf enthusiasts and beach lovers.

Port Location

The cruise terminal is located within the large, industrial Port of Port Elizabeth. It is situated very close to the city center, just 2-3 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) from key attractions like the city hall and the Donkin Reserve.

Due to the commercial nature of the port, it is not safe or pleasant to walk out. Cruise lines typically provide shuttle buses, or passengers can take taxis or pre-booked tours to reach the city center. Amenities at the terminal itself are very limited, and ships always dock directly at a commercial quay; tendering is not used here.

Local Currency

The official currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). While some tourist-focused shops may accept US dollars, it is not common practice, and the exchange rate will not be favorable. It is highly recommended to use the local currency for all transactions.

ATMs are widely available in shopping centers and throughout the city for withdrawing ZAR. Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are accepted in most established shops, restaurants, and hotels. It's always wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases or at local markets.

Safety Considerations

Port Elizabeth is a large city, and visitors should exercise the same precautions they would in any major urban area. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuable items like expensive cameras and jewelry, and keep your belongings secure to prevent petty theft.

It is generally safe to explore the main tourist areas, such as the beachfront and the Donkin Reserve, during the day. However, it is advisable to avoid walking alone at night. For visits to townships or more remote areas, booking a reputable guided tour is the safest and most insightful option.

Weather & Climate

Port Elizabeth has a mild climate year-round but is known for being windy. The main cruise season aligns with the South African summer (November to March), which brings warm to hot and often humid conditions.

During this period, average daily temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Summer is also the wetter season, though rain usually comes in the form of brief afternoon thundershowers rather than all-day downpours. Passengers should pack lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and a light rain jacket.

Getting Around

Upon arrival at the port, the most convenient transportation options are pre-booked shore excursions, private tours, or taxis. A taxi rank is usually available just outside the port security gate.

Ride-sharing services like Uber operate in Port Elizabeth and are a popular and often affordable way to get around the city. While a public bus system exists, it can be complex for visitors to navigate on a limited time schedule.

For most of the main attractions within the city, a short taxi or shuttle ride from the port is all that is required.

Shopping

For a modern shopping experience, cruise passengers can visit major malls like Walmer Park Shopping Centre or Greenacres Shopping Centre, both a short taxi ride from the port. These malls feature a range of national retailers, boutiques, and restaurants.

For authentic souvenirs, look for local arts and crafts, including intricate beadwork, wood carvings, and vibrant textiles, which can sometimes be found at beachfront markets. South African wine and Amarula cream liqueur are also popular items to take home. Prices in formal stores are fixed, but friendly bargaining may be possible with vendors at informal craft stalls.
