The premier attraction for visitors is Gulangyu Island, a pedestrian-only UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its Victorian-era architecture and Piano Museum, accessible via a short 20-minute ferry ride from the cruise hub.

Another essential stop is South Putuo Temple (Nanputuo Temple), a renowned Buddhist monastery founded during the Tang Dynasty that sits just a 15-minute drive from the port area. Visitors can also explore Hulishan Fortress, located about 20 minutes away, which features historic nineteenth-century iron cannons and sweeping ocean views along Ring Gold Coast Road.

A popular day excursion takes passengers to the historic Fujian Tulou earthen houses, such as those at Nanjing Tulou, located approximately two hours inland by tour bus. These massive, multi-family circular earthen structures offer an incredible glimpse into Hakka architecture and culture.

Nearby historic coastal cities like Quanzhou, situated about an hour north by high-speed rail or coach, showcase ancient maritime Silk Road heritage and historic stone bridges.

The main cruise terminal, Xiamen International Cruise Center (Dongdu Terminal), is conveniently located on the western shore of Xiamen Island, just a 10 to 15-minute drive from downtown areas like Zhongshan Road.

Most cruise ships berth directly alongside the terminal dock, so tendering is rarely required. The modern terminal complex offers air-conditioned lounges, currency exchange, tourist information desks, taxis, and a selection of local shops and eateries.

The official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY or RMB). US dollars and Euros are generally not accepted for everyday purchases, so having local currency or digital payment methods is necessary.

Summer months can bring heavy rainfall and occasional typhoons from July to September. Passengers should pack breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are plentiful outside the cruise terminal and offer affordable fares into downtown and major sights. For crossing over to Gulangyu, passengers take the dedicated Gulangyu Tourist Ferry from the International Cruise Center terminal.

The city also features a clean, efficient underground subway system (Xiamen Metro) and an elevated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network. Participating in an organized Xiamen City Sightseeing Tour or hiring a private driver are popular hassle-free options for shore excursions.

Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street is Xiamen's primary shopping thoroughfare, featuring a vibrant mix of historic arcade buildings, modern department stores, and local boutiques. Visitors frequently search for local specialties such as high-grade Tieguanyin oolong tea, lacquered thread sculptures, local pearl jewelry, and traditional Amoy pastries.

Prices in fixed-price stores and department centers are non-negotiable, though polite bargaining is common in informal market stalls. Duty-free shopping facilities are available inside the main cruise terminal building for departing passengers.
